How many domainers / companies / developers do you think there are that scour expired & drop lists every day?

Dozens, hundreds, thousands? Where do you think this number will be in 3 - 5 years?

Domainers - thousands

Companies - I can't see many looking thru dropped lists unless they have a specific department assigned to do this.

Developers - Somewhere in the hundreds probably

3-5 years thoughts : Depending on the industry. This number has gone up from several years past, so if the trend continues there will be more people/competition. But I think it's also important to note a lot of people quit and leave as well.

I would say it's only in the low-to-mid hundreds.

The hottest names names at Namejet will get 100 - 200 bidders so that will give a baseline. So yeah, maybe a tad more.

There are people who use desktop drop catching software or other services as well.

When I spent time drop catching I'd go through the list and find dozens of names I wanted. If I saw big demand at some of the drop catching sites I didn't even bother - I just put other domains into my drop catcher and tried to get them that way.

Yeah, I revise my estimate to low thousands. There must be a lot who participate in GoDaddy Auctions alone, and that's harder to quantify. I typically focus on pending deletes (because I hate how pre-release names get renewed or in the case of Namejet how user auctions are sprinkled in with true expiring domains) and GoDaddy Auctions. But in my small universe, for the names I do go after, it's the same 20 people for the most part, the usual suspects.

And in regards to your question, there is a distinction between people who are analyzing the drop lists and people who are just browsing through auctions. Why do you ask? Are you thinking about providing a new service?

Not at the moment. Just throwing a question out into the world, which I have wondered myself at times.

I think there are 50 - 100 frequent buyers that take the time to read the list every day, and are willing to spend some money daily. I don't think there are any more than that; the rest are casual buyers or first time buyers.

There will always be competition for premium names that get all of the 'lookie-lous' out to place the starting bid, but I find that there is still not overwhelming competition for good/decent names ($x,xxx resale) that you would have to scour PenDel and Expiring lists for.

Based on popular domaining, auction and backorder websites, Daily Visitors, bids, views and general interest of the public etc figures, I estimate the number of domainers is about 50,000-150,000 or more.
Many people from different countries may enter Domaining in some point in their life.

I estimate the current the number of developers who look for domains is in the thousands.
I estimate the current the number of companies who look for domains is in the hundreds.

*With the increasing demand of premium domains and the growing number of unavailable "premium" or decent .com or .net or ccTLD domains, it is more than likely that the number of companies / developers who scour expired & drop lists every day will increase.

I'd say it was hundreds years ago. However, I'd say it's easily in the thousands by now. In another 3-5 years I think it's hard to say, allot can happen by then!
