How is this possible? Optical Illusion

Could someone explain how this is possible?!?

Ive been looking at it for about 15 minutes, im thinking of printing it out and and cutting the parts out :D .

Someone explain!

You maybe right, but that still does not explain the fact that objects of equal area re-arranged should still take up the same area. They don't.

A MATH major helped me figure it out. The hypotenuse of the second trigangle is not straight. Basically, look at the difference 3 sqaures in from the left side.

ahh yes I didn't see that until you posted it apexad. If you look at both *triangles* you can see that it does not intercept the grid boxes in the same places for both images. If they were both the same siz/shape it would.

I believe you meant a heptagon

Neither one is a triangle.. (or a septagon.. or a heptagon)

The first is a quadrilateral. (The "hypoteneuse" isn't really a hypoteneuse.)
The second is an octogon.

It's simple. The hole is there even when you can't see it. You can't see it because it is "filled" by the shapes. You move the shapes and that hidden hole appears.
