How does a domain transaction generally work?

Let's say I own wxyz.com. Can someone please walk through how I would sell that domain (sites to do that), what payment methods? Do I get the money first and they trust I send it? Also, the reverse, me buying wxyz.com. I am mainly interested in the trust issues, did the wire clear, did the paypal get reversed, is the person really going to send me the domain?

If you don't use an escrow service, is there a lot of trust required? Any info on this would super super helpful! Thanks in advanced!

I would suggest to use SEDO or any other escrow services. If its a high value transaction. Anywhere above $300. I have used SEDO for even smaller transaction when I don't really know the buyer and vice versa.

SEDO is most popular domain selling platform. Many end user buyers search for domains on SEDO.COM

There are many escrow services. I have never used them but here they are

What I like abouvt SEDO is can also transfer the money to your paypal account. I think others don't. I maybe wrong. Please do your research before using any one of them.

It depends very much on the specific sale and not least the price. For small transactions it's relative quite expensive and complicated to use an escrow service. For example, here at NP many names are sold in the $xx range. Using an escrow service for such transactions would be overkill. If you are selling at a place such as NP the reputation score of a profile is a really good indicator if you can trust people. On other platforms and for larger transactions using an escrow service is a good idea.

For small transactions like $x-$xx, buyer pays first usually through Paypal. For big transactions (above $xxx), escrow is being used for the protection of both buyer and seller.
