How do I know if a site/domain is banned?

I have heard this term many a times at namepros for people asking why someone's domain name has been banned from the search engine
Is there any way I can find it out?

Also, one more question about the proxies
Schools/Colleges keep on blocking proxies
Does that mean once a domain gets added in their blocking database, its there forever. Is there any place on net to find which all proxies are getting blocked etc( may be somebody came up with a script which analyze the proxy domain which has traffic in the past but not more)

Banned in Google? Use this method to check;

site:www.example.com

If it doesn't appear, there's a chance that it's probably banned though I don't think there's any other way to be 100% sure.

Not too sure about the proxies thing...people usually abandon or sell their banned proxies cheap.

Whois.sc will also show if the domain is Black Listed.

It's difficult to get "banned" outright from google - more often sites that google has problems with get relegated into "supplemental results"; duplicate content often the reason - upon fixing the problems, it usually takes about a month or so to get out of supplemental.

In regards to proxies - blocking them is like whack-a-mole. Many students still find a way through to "blocked" sites - and I know that from firsthand experience with some sites I used to run.

In regards to Whois.sc blacklisting query tool mentioned by Yofie - blacklisting is often an indication there's a spammer, etc on the same webhosting provider - many websites often share the same IP address / range ... one bad apple can cause many other sites to be adversely effected - definitely worth checking the status every few weeks or so.

check your site via
on google type site:yourdomain.com and site:www.yourdomain.com
then see if it has backlinks
link:yourdomain.com
if no result for your domain most probably it's banned
you can email them at and explain the situation so they can relist
[email protected]

or post specifics about your domain in question at
http://groups.google.com/group/Google_Webmaster_Help
be patient usually they answer within 24 to 48 hours
it's a forum but works a lot like newsgroups/usenet
