How do I get started?

Hi,

I read an article in CNNMoney.com about web domains, http://money.cnn.com/magazines/business2/business2_archive/2007/06/01/100050989/index.htm, and this sounds really interesting. Now I've started enough business ventures to know that this probably isn't something into and get rich quick, but it was enough to pique my curiosity. I have had tons of domain names, mostly because I was planning on building a website on them.

I've thought about buying a domain name and just letting it sit there and have people click on links, but I never really took it that seriously until I read this article.

So now I'm wondering if that is the best way to go. Do some research find out good words and misspellings of common domain names and see where it takes me. Does anyone have any advice?

I've only been doing this about 6 months, so my advice to another newbie would be:

do not buy a name just because you think it sounds cool

learn how to research a domain before buying one

scour namepros for posts by professionals!

My first and most important suggestion would be: take your time! The web domain industry isn't going anywhere and there are plenty of great domains left on the market.

Like RCRiver said, research a name and make sure it's a good investment before purchasing. Although it may be only a $7 investment, you want to get into the habit of understanding the worth of a domain before purchasing.

Go for generic .com names e.g. I just registered PokerAsie.com - I don't know if it's any good but it is generic and could prove interesting

1 - You've come to the right (best) place IMHO.

2 - While learning from posts and reading is great, the experience of doing teaches you even more. So register something and jump in with a site. As you progress you'll find you just get better at finding a good name, developing, marketing, etc...

as everyone has stated, you should do alot of research before purchasing a name, you should look for trademarks and such things too, look if the domains been pre-owned or if its got pagerank. these can be a big help when deciding if you want to register this domain, a cool looking name doesn't always get you to far

Hi Namefocus! I am also very new and did a fair number of searches before buying a few domains. My research paid off when I was able to hand register muscular.tv and prosecutor.tv, I have already been offered $xxx for one of them which is many times my initial investment!

Get ready for long hours typing in search bars for available domains and good luck! =)
