Hits vs. Pageviews

Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't hits just every page/image/file thats downloaded from your server? so if a page with 20 images on it would count as 21 hits and one pageview

If this is correct, why do people give stats in number of hits and not pageviews. Hits mean almost nothing.

You are correct. Hits can be anything and should never be used as a basis for estimating traffic. The two important stats are unique visitors and pageviews.

You could get hits by making a file that loads 1000 1px images

Someone shared that with me in 1997 and it stuck with me. Back then it was all about having a hit counter on your website. I'm glad that trend is going away.
