HillaryDuff.com is at auction right now at SnapNames.com. It's at $1,050 now with 2 days to go.

My question is, isn't a buyer asking for trouble if they pay too much for the name because her lawyers will surely be able to get the name back. Aren't there plenty of cases now in which the celebrities have won?

I made an initial $60 bid, mostly out of curiousity so I can watch the bidding.

Although it is spelt wrong, this domain will receive TONNES of traffic. Lots of revenue. IMHO it would be a great investment if it didn't result in it getting taken away.

For sure - It has an overture of 2212 for hillaryduff.com with extension D-:

Hilaryduff.com is 9252 with extension.

Cases have gone both ways. But, recently, I have seen quite a few cases of celebrities winning. It would jsut be too risky.

I may be completely out of the loop here, but I don't see the problem. Granted, if the domain up for sale was something like Yaho, Gogle etc, then ok, blatant copyright infringement. While there may be a Hilaryduff.com site, any average fan wanting to create a fan site would probably try and put her name in the domain name.

It's not like a corporation. There are a million and one things you could call a small business without resorting to "Yaho" etc, but if you're creating a fan site about Hilary Duff, then you're going to want the name "Hilary Duff" in the domain name, in some form at least. I'm not sure where the law stands on this, but I do not see how they should (not could) be able to prosecute.

There are plenty of people who will take a name like this at the right price.

I guess the trick is to spread your risk buy having many celebrity/trademark domains, it is then unlikely that you would get trouble with all of them.

And, when a spelling mistake is involved in a famous persons name, don't you think they would be a little embarrassed to make it known that many fans couldn't spell the name right?

Funny these celeb names.

There are of course a few people called Hillary Duff and if the domain is available I can't see the fuss.

The internet is supposed to be a free and open market, if some celeb does not jump on their own name as a domain I say tough sh*t to them.

I think so to. Does Snapnames.com even inform people on this issue?

They don't really notify people if the name has inherent legal risks, if that's
what you mean. But they do state in their legal fine prints it's up to the buyer
to assess whether there are such or not.
