To start out I recommend taking time to read about the various types of Domain names, for example Keyword Domains, Brandables etc. What you need to learn is how to value a domain for both wholesale and retail, how to recognise a domain's strengths, and who will buy it.

These answers will not come overnight, so initially I would read rather than buy names. Also become more interested in how and where to sell your names than acquiring new ones. That should slow you down enough to understand what you are getting into, before that precious seed cash is spent.
