Help restricting access on server

hey i am doing a site for someone and on there server when you go to a folder with a url in your browser, it shows up the files in that folder in a list.... how do i stop it from doing that? also how do i prevent access to a specific file?

If server runs with CPanel or other, you can do it with that, look for a tool like Index Manager.

Else you can do it yourself. Create a file called .htaccess with the following line :

Options All -Indexes

And place this file in the directory you want no listing. It will deny listing for subdirectory too.
