Hi everyone...Ray here. New to the domaining scene (about 3 months), so please be gentle. Paid $97 to learn domain flipping from a reputable "coach" back in July. Learned some things, but the coaching was incomplete, and he kind of left me high and dry and didn't answer a lot of questions I had. On my own over the past few months, I've become pretty good at finding domains, but I never really learned how best to sell them, so I'm hoping to figure that out here. I'd appreciate any advice you folks may have, not just in selling, but in all facets of domaining.

I have about 40 domains right now that I would like to sell. Guidance and advice is really appreciated! Should I put any credence in appraisals from places like GoDaddy, FreeValuator, and estibot? I've been using FV and GD almost exclusively so far.

Also, looking through the "Requests" section, I see people looking for domains in a lot of different niches and categories. I have a question...If I don't have any domains in a niche someone is looking for, but feel pretty sure I can find them some, is it acceptable to PM them and ask if we can work out a deal where I research and find them X number of possible domains that would work for them, for a flat fee? That way, I'm not buying domains to hopefully sell to them that they may not be interested in (saving me a lot of $$), and they're not forced to over pay for domains they may not be thrilled about, saving them $$? BTW, if this isn't the correct place to ask this question, I apologize.

    Thanks,
    Ray

    Hello!

Personally I tend to evaluate the value of domain names that interest me by checking out comparable actual sales on Name Bio or by my records of previous related sales over the years.

    Welcome to NamePros!

Welcome @eastbay66 and good to have you in NPs! Enjoyed reading the background in OP. Here are my answers to your questions.
    1. Re valuators, while nothing wrong with checking GoValue or Estibot, never rely on them as your only source of valuation. Take a multi-faceted approach looking at past sales on NameBio, how unique name is, how many organizations might reasonably want the name, trends, how much interest in niche, etc. GoValue does give you comparator sales NameBio is missing, often. The key question always is who might desire this domain name.
    2. I think when people post requests they are looking directly for domains and not soliciting help in researching possible domains (unless the request says they are).
I hope your time in domains will be interesting and profitable! Welcome!

    Bob

Thanks so much @MetBob...a lot of things to take into consideration. The reason I was asking about valuators is because I bought a domain in August called frozendesigns .net. Poor appraisal on GD and Estibot, but Freevaluator .com valued it at $14+ milliion. I'm guessing because it's aged (2008) and has over 1.7 million MOZ equity links. When you have valuations so far apart, it's tough to know which is accurate...if any. I actually felt it was a good name to resell, so I bought it.

Also, thanks for the advice in #2. Appreciated!

    Ray

I think you showed perfect sense in ignoring GV and Esti on this one as I like FrozenDesigns and think you were wise to go with your opinions based on multiple aspects rather than what an evaluator said. I could see it for ice sculptures, a design business in cold country, a design archivist site, winter wear designer, frozen desert cakes or sundaes, etc Best of luck with it!

    Bob

Ps I think FreeValuator view themselves as URL evaluator vs domain name so place huge emphasis on back links and age.

Hi Ray and welcome to nps!

Haven't read through all the replies yet, but just so you know, selling here (on this site) you are only going to get wholesale prices. Nothing wrong with that, but a lot of people are looking for end user prices and can get disappointed if they are not aware of the offers they will likely get here.

Stop regging and spend some time learning from this site...lots of useful info and many people willing to offer constructive criticism...best wishes!

Welcome to NamePro @eastbay66. I've been at domaining about the same amount of time as you. The advice I've here on NP is: read and learn, be patient, and don't spend too much until you understand how the process works. With the 40 domains you have so far, you can experiment with pricing and registrars. Then you can develop a strategy that will work for you. Best of luck!

Thanks for that insight Bob! I like those ideas for websites/businesses! That is one of the things I like about FreeValuator...they show you the backlinks, MOZ equity links, DA & PA, and also Alexa rank (if it exists). I honestly don't know if frozendesigns is worth $14 million, but I do know how important those MOZ equity links are, and with 1,174,270 of them, maybe that valuation is pretty legitimate. Thanks again!

Thanks @Mister Funsky for the advice. Trying to learn before leaping now. I appreciate your advice on wholesale prices. I have a few domains that would fit in that category.

Thanks @J Sokol. I appreciate the good advice. I have a spreadsheet with well over a thousand domains that have appraisals from GD, Esti, and FreeValuator ranging from over $1k up to over $5M. Not gonna act on any more till I learn what the heck I'm doing. Wish the "coach" I had would have done better for me, but, you live and you learn, right?

Yes, always. Sounds as if you're really organized and have made a great start. We can all learn from each other here at NP.
