Ever wonder what .gov costs?

The General Services Administration (GSA) today announced it will start charging agencies $125 a year for .gov domains. There are more than 3,400 sites using .gov

What I want to know is why it costs that much to manage the domain when the private sector does it for $8-$15 in general.

Since it's all government agencies paying the $125, guess who REALLY pays the half million dollars they just charged!

This news and more from Domain Food.

I don't think .gov extensions should be public. you think the government owns them, not some website owner that just bought an extension. :D

May be some of these agencies would have the common sense to switch to .US :!:

Um, some of you missed the details, while .gov is more open now, it's still restricted to government agencies, but now including state and local levels as well as some American Indian interests.

Binfus that is a good point, they should switch to website.state.us but of course they won't, not feeling any pain to spend tax payer dollars of $1250+ every decade instead of $70 a decade.

We have a gouv.fr for France (gouv=gov in french...), and if I'm not wrong, it's the same price than for a .fr but of course it's not a TLD...

General Services Administration (GSA) is part of the Government.

Isn't lot of GSA in private sector? I know few companies who are GSA certified. Are they elligible for the domain too?
