Did you guys know that when google was released in 1999, the publishers thought that they were spelling gogle, like swimming gogles. It makes sense cause google is a search engige an gogle would mean to look for. THis is an intrested fact that i saw on an interview of the one dude from the google team in the newspaper

I've had that fact in the back of my mind several times. When I first heard of google.com I actually thought the word was derived from swimming gogles (just with a different spelling for the sake of marketing). When reading google.com I doubt a whole lot of people derive the word from googol :D

I came across the word googol ("The number 10 raised to the power 100 (10100), written out as the numeral 1 followed by 100 zeros.") well after "Google" and had assumed it was in reference to their volume, ("googols") of links which would cause cause people to "ogle". Never even thought of associating swimming "goggles" w/ the name.
Hmm.. Interesting. All of the relevant associations that their name conjures up, (whether by design or not), would seem to offer some clues regarding made-up names/expressions and their branding potential. ie Yahoo!

Doesn't quite explain eBay or the word association of Amazon and books, however. Bay/Harbor/Pay/Play/? Amazon/Amazing/Large?

Tx for info
Hmm... I had been thinking more along the lines of Electronically Bilking Auction Yo-yos
I think eBals aka eBalls would be a better acronym for them ie Electronically Bilking Auction Listers

The number "googol" or "google" means 10^100 - it is the highest number with a name. This word has been around long before the search engine, and according to this site, is where the search engine got its name:

http://www.question.com/content/google_04-10-04.html

I guess it is a reference to the volume of their database, but I bet when they named it, they never thought they'd be the huge company they are today. Interesting thread!

No biggie, but I realize that "googol" was around long before "google". I was trying to show, in reverse fashion, how "Google" was responsible for bringing me to the term "googol", which was as result of searching, a few years ago, for root terms the founders may have used when creating the name. It's interesting to me that I discovered googol while overlooking the more obvious, goggles.

Just goes to show you that it is a good practice to wear goggles when googling, because there are googols of links in the google db base to ogle at. Makes me want to go gah-gah at the go-go, go to a goo-goo dolls concert or go gonzo but i'll just go and google I guess.
I wonder what "Ads by Google" will show at the bottom of the page after this post. :hehe:
