Must read article...

Domain Name Registration - Google is now going to track when a domain is registered among other things. An older domain will get a higher ranking. No more throw away domain names. No more jump to the top of Google results in thirty days.

They will also be tracking the length of renewal on the theory that a person that renews for ten years will be more likely to build a worthwhile site than someone who only holds their domain for a year.

Google will also be keeping a blacklist of known spammers and will be using this list when checking dns records of websites. So spammers who make sure to get their new throwaway domains with different nameservers in order to throw Google off may have to try something new.

Stephan Miller’s article featured in WebProNews is his analysis of this document Google's Patent Application. I will personally attempt to contact Mr. Miller in hopes of identifying which parts of this document he bases his conclusions on.

PS. The website of this articles origin StephanMiller.com expires Jan 20th 2006. It appears he only registered it for one year, I guess he better renew it soon and for at least five years if he wants to do well in the serps. :hehe:

Today Stephan Miller contacted me with an explanation as to why he concluded this regarding Google,
They will also be tracking the length of renewal on the theory that a person that renews for ten years will be more likely to build a worthwhile site than someone who only holds their domain for a year
by referring me to section [0099] of the description of the application.

Here is that section:
[0099] Certain signals may be used to distinguish between illegitimate and legitimate domains. For example, domains can be renewed up to a period of 10 years. Valuable (legitimate) domains are often paid for several years in advance, while doorway (illegitimate) domains rarely are used for more than a year. Therefore, the date when a domain expires in the future can be used as a factor in predicting the legitimacy of a domain and, thus, the documents associated therewith.

This appears reasonably comprehensible.

Mole, thanks for the link.

Kim, that was very industrious of you to contact the author for further clarification. Good work!

At the same time, I can't help but laugh, because this appears to be the second time (recently) that you showed an author not following their own advice.

Still not entirely buying it... (As Slaughterbeck points out above, even those that preach it don't always pratice it...), but a good read.

And Slaughterbeck, way to go above and beyond on contacting the author B-)

I don't like that idea because it's just going to screw a lot of things up. There won't be a lot of new sites the Internet will get boring. There won't be any competition because people will just be buying old sites and not trying to make a new site. Their just making it harder for newbies!

IMHO this is just more bad news for the little guy. Agaim IMO Google users would be better served if they would get rid of the dead links and down junk sites. They say they hate spammers but do nothing.

Do a search on "Sonic Poker" and observe the Google site description and then the real site content. Total spam and this doesn't scratch the surface of what I found while doing some research over the last few days.

Google is already packed with old stale content and this would just make it worse.

MSN (and I am a mickysoft hater) is now my default search. That is where the fresh content is.

Google's shenanigans are obvious to those that look beyond the smoke an mirrors. But for the rest, well, they'll just keep asking Google, "HOW HIGH SHALL I JUMP FOR YOU THIS TIME, GOOGLE, SIR!?"

Yet another ploy by the socialists at Google to get webmasters to use AdWords in order to get noticed in Google.

Everything is so Google-centric these days...and doesn't it make a proud, free American want to peeeewk!!!

Boycott Google (don't worry, the .COM is already taken, but .ORG and all others are still available).

Try MSN and Yahoo instead. Much better search results without the socialist games.

Ditto. Except I don't hate MS or their products simply becasue I don't jump on bandwagons built on jealousy.

I'd imagine some Google supporters might say that your (and other's) Anti-Google comments are doing that with them. I'm not saying you are, but it's a reminder that things can look very different depending on what perspective you view them.

Zquest,

You say it pretty well without the fluff :bingo:

Hate M$ might be a bit strong but IMO they sell an overpriced inferior product. I use every piece of Open Source software I can. I have managed to move most of my work to a SuSE box. I must admit XP isn't bad but why pay for M$ Office when Open Office is free. (sorry I got off topic).

Actually I have a love/hate thing with Google. Their search results have degraded badly but I like my AdSense income stream. My ability to get new sites listed in MSN is cool and isn't it a kick that a good number of these visitors clicked AdSense.

They are the 900 lb gorilla but so was IBM in the 1970's.80's. Oh how the mighty can fall and if they don't get a better grasp on reality it could very well happen.

i think you hit the nail on the head with this... i wouldnt be surprised if this was actually the 'main' motivation behind many of googles moves...

A light just went off in my head. The major competition with my primary site buys AdWords & I don't. I can't get above him on Google but can on other SE's. I am pushing him though. He keeps feeling me out about 'buying my site' but it ain't for sale (yet). I am starting another one (actually a network of pure informational sites with revenue derived via advertising) from scratch & at the right time I will quote him a price. :hehe:
