You can't compare .com and .tv at this point in time.

.com was introduced in 1985 and .tv in 1996, eleven years later.

Moreover, online video hasn't really become mainstream before 2006-2007 or so, which means that .tv hasn't been really relevant as the TLD of choice for rich media websites and online video until two years ago.

So you can't really compare .com (the biggest TLD in the world for 23 years) and .tv (only really relevant for 2 years or so in the world of multimedia and online video).

But if you compare the young .tv with a very established, old and respectable extension like .org (introduced in 1985 too), you'll notice that .tv has been really doing extremely well and will probably catch up on .org pretty soon. For example, in Mexico, .tv is already ahead of .org :

Anyway, even if .tv is the fastest growing extension of all time (according to Verisign themselves), there's so much more to the Internet than a battle between extensions.

The Internet should be about providing users with great useful content, and lots of .tv websites are doing a fantastic job there. That's the most interesting and most important part in my humble opinion. :)

Very true, it's an unfair comparison at this point.

I have the patience of a 2 year old child sometimes!

Interesting the large percentage of spanish speaking countries that are searching for .tv
Bolivia, Panama, Mexico etc....

Well spotted...

The world's most popular .tv site (in terms of traffic) at this point is actually Spanish. It's TU.TV which has about 270,000 unique visitors per day !

Definitely does wonders to .tv awareness in Spanish-speaking countries. :)
