The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

I heard about this some time ago. I very much doubt they would implement such a feature that would affect everyones results as it would be too open for abuse.

If this type of feature is implemented then the webmasters will have to hire a huge staff just to vote their sites back to a better positions. This is not a foolproof plan. I think the algo thing that is working right now is the most reliable one. Atleast webmasters are working up and putting some good content on their sites.

This type of voting will just spam the index beyond the imagination.

Google To Abandon PageRank?

Oh, I love this idea and hope it actually gets adopted by everyone into their daily habits! Google might put two little icons next to each search engine listing. If you click the little X icon, it means you don't like the result. If you click the little up arrow, you do like it. Potentially, that would get rid of the spam sites and help all the real "useful" sites float to the top of search engine result pages.

I think the Internet is still in an opportunistic phase. If Google does something like this, it will be really good for those who have established websites which are the best among their competition. It will also be really good for the general public. However, it would make it harder for a new site to start out (since organic traffic would be harder to come by).

Now is definitely the time to be developing your best domains into the best websites in their category. Yesterday was the best time to start, but today is better than tomorrow. As distribution channels for Internet content become less random and more user chosen, the cream will float to the top.

That is nice, i think Google should try that and i want them to implement those buttons since the pagerank is updating two times per year . I think after they will implement this feature , the great sites will now become what they should be, really great .

Until your competitors start hiring cheap labor to google-search lists of relevant keyphrases and click the "X"'s for everyone's site except their own... :td:

("Rankings fraud", anyone?)

I agree - just like pagerank it will be gamed. And why not? Higher search results = more traffic. And more traffic = more dollars.

They either implement never before seen security and/or validation with this system or they will open the door to the biggest uncontrollable fraud yet to be seen online.
Everything SEO would be out the door, what would matter is who's got the deeper pockets to afford clickers - content and validity could easily be disregarded. Even if the "true users" may not like a site, chances are that they will just click out of it and go to the next listing. Unless Google is offering an incentive for people to take the time to rate each site they come to, the regular user will most likely not make use of it, but the paid clicker is going to have a field and payday with it.
Google would understand how to put their own spin on it and most likely have "preferred rankings" where they can easily influence rankings even more than they do nowadays.
Bottom line, this is yet another horrible idea from the internet god, that has grown to be an unacceptable heavy weight with way too much influence.

However I seriosuly hope that they do not implement this in any way other than for the persons own searches. If they open it up it will be open for abuse.

Imagine the run on XSS exploits being taken advantage of so the hacker/spammer can get their site to the top of the results at the expense of the sites that should be at the top of the queue.

XSS is usually used to steal sensitive data but I could quite easily see how this could be used to ensure a site got to the top of a search result.

This is an INCREDIBLY bad idea.

I want relevant results, not ones made by deep-pockets.

Those other sites may be bad, but they may also contain the information I need versus some website owner who asks people to high-five his site name even though his site contains nothing useful.

This is stupid.

It's much more work and money to game a system which involves human voting than it is to game the current system. I like this idea and hope it comes to pass.

depending on how much weight goes into the "voting", a small group of users around the world (different ip addresses) can easily manipulate the results to get their websites onto the first page.

better yet, if you have a site geared towards the local community, you can easily get into the top spot by voting at home, your friends' homes, your family's homes, public libraries, and any hotspots.

i don't like your site so I have me, my family, my friends, my customers and everyone else I know go thumb down your site.

I will pay the WoW offshore gold miners to make some ching by thumbing down your site.

This is an extremely BAD idea. Just look at the elitist A-holes at D i g g and S U

Maybe you'll have to have a gmail account...they could track it that way pretty well for fraud.

It's a good concept on paper, but in reality it would never work. Despite repeated attempts to curb click fraud, it still isn't stopped 100% of the time. There will always be those who are paid to click to improve the rankings.

Sometimes, though, I wish the up and down buttons were available on NamePros. :yell: I suppose that's what the reputation system is for, though.

OMG...abuse anyone?

I think this will be spammed as well, and they won't be able to control this in a true legitimate way and fair competition for all webmasters.
