I've heard that the function in google search link: url to check backlinks is highly inaccurate. Is that true? What do you use to check it?

Use google webmaster tools account. It will give you more details on backlinks pointing to your site.

The "link:website.ext" is inaccurate. They hide things... Use Google Webmasters or Yahoo Site Explorer.

I just use Yahoo Site explorer. And I think you should use that as well. Google doesn't show everything out there. If you use the webmaster tool though it shows.

Well why Google wouldn't giue accurate info in one place and give it correctly in webmaster tools ?

Where did you heard that thing "Li Weng"?

I check backlinks on other webmastering tools than Google but it seems new in my ear to heard that Google is inaccurate.

Completely innacurate.

Example- link:OurVote.us returns 6 sites.

However, last month (durring the election), estibot showed we had 400,000 backlinks.

We did get 13,000 uniques on the day of the election.. so I doubt we only had 6 backlinks.

I do not know what the right answer is. Obviously things are constanty changing on google.... sites that are linking to yours are going higher and lower... dont know whats going on - not sure anyone does.

IMO they're not hiding the backlinks, they're protecting the site? Since their algo use the link as one of its ranking basis that would be an easy access for your competitor to look where your links are coming from and from there they can formulate lots of tactics to catch up against you.

google webmaster tools is best, the link:url does not show all the links to a site just a sample.

I would prefer google webmasters tool. However, checking through link:site can also play some rolls on your ranking.

Yahoo

Even webmaster tools does not show all the links as quickly as Yahoo.
