As a writer and scholar, I keep trying to figure out this wacky world of domain name value and appraisal. I've been told more than once that names I think may have value are "crappy" or worth "0".

I don't mind. Got to start the learning process somewhere.

So, here's two more domains for your honest kick and boot if necessary. If you have any encouraging words, I appreciate those too.

Ghostwritten.com
(Works for me in my field-- don't know about others)

Dumbstruck.net

BackSpaces.com
(This was one of the first domain names I bought for development purposes. I'm thinking about developing it as a site for chiropractors, massage therapists, and other "bodyworkers." Probably not what the name was originally registered for, but I'm a little quirky that way and I think it just might work.)

I love Ghostwritten.com, it has big potential but the effort to develop may be discouraging. A blog site for like minded, wow... talk about the potential for creativity. Let me come back to this later.

Apologies, but I have a bias against anything not .COM, and I only own one .NET (loiter.net). "Dumbstruck" is good, maybe "dumbstruck on the net" or "dumbstruck by the net". Cowboy comedians saying "There's your sign" and "You know you're a redneck when..." would lend perfectly a low-brow gist toward a funny "you have GOT to be kiddin me" photo/cartoon web site. Takes time to develop, usually a labor of love.
--- $25/$80 domain wholesale/retail
--- $250 turn-key developed
--- $1000 and up fully developed

BackSpaces.com is ok, but not as good as BackSpace.com - no interest about anything else but words on a printed page relating to the backspace key on a typewriter or computer keyboard. It would make a great "retraction" web site. Great for the unknown home journalist criticizing critics. Politics, religion, crass commercialization, and whole host of other general topics. A companion to Ghostwritten.com - Backspaces.com could be a place for "whoa, let's back up and do this again" or re-visit hidden agenda wordage from big-talk-swagger blowhards that begs scrutiny. Another labor of love that could be a great contribution to free thinkers around the world.
--- $40/$100 domain wholesale/retail
--- $400 turn-key developed
--- $1500 and up fully developed

Now, back to Ghostwritten.com - you live in Canada, good for you. But in the US, current copyright laws are just killing creativity and innovation. This could be an opportunity to develop a web site that could easily build respect and credibility. Talented people, regardless of education or experience, all over the world would love to participate. Potential for creating a unique niche that becomes a resource (freelance meeting place) lending talent on loan for more subject areas than a phone book directory... Please, don't get me started...

However, this demands alot of time and effort, and eventually a staff. Good ideas often stay as ideas due to lack of resources.

I have blog web site templates not being used plus plenty of room on my web host reseller accounts, but I don't have the time. Domain collectors selling domain names to other domain collectors and not a stitch of content anywhere to be seen. End users with incentive/initiative and content are on short supply. Without content, a web site is nothing but low rating search engine fodder.

Well said drsx

I like the the names, particularly ghostwriters and dumbstruck.(So shocked or astonished as to be rendered speechless.)

Net lowers value a bit as was stated. Both are single word domains, and they all are are aesthetically appealling, but are not inherently strong words for resale market. However, they truly are strong enough to hold onto and are worthy of development. You seem to be close to the content, so they seem ideally suited names to develop and grow with.

dumbstruck.net $15/$20

Developing Ideas

Thank you both for your very considered responses here. Explanations like this are especially helpful (and somewhat rare) in sorting through appraisal and development possibilities.

Funny, I didn't even think of the connection between Ghostwritten and Backspaces. I'll be chewing on these for a while.

I am currently developing OneThumbUp.com right now, so Dumbstruck.net might work well as a parnter site.

ghostwriters.com $30/$40

:p It's ghostwritten.com, Michael. If it was ghostwriters.com, I imagine the name would be worth about $1,000 or so to the right person.

Still, Ghostwritten.com appears to have real potential, specially since you are a writer, and can easily apply yourself to this project. As pointed out, few domainers are actually able to develop their domains; with this domain, you don't have this handicap.

Backspaces.com looks like an easygoing, brandable domain. Offhand, I imagine it can have use in:

- real estate ('backyard spaces', or maybe someone who deals in large, rural properties)

- furniture (backs...chairs...furniture)

- historical or ancestral websites

These three may seem like a stretch, but that's where branding and marketing come in. Handled correctly, ideas like these can be made to stick. Of course, a significant budget can't hurt. :)

Best of luck with your efforts, Tom.

Thanks for the suggestions, Apollo!

I don't know if there's a big market in "historical or ancestral websites," but that's the one I like the best. Heh, I wasn't even thinking in that direction.

I agree with you on the significant budget. However, I would add that it only hurts when you could use it and don't have it! I'll be developing my sites on sweat equity.

I like ghostwritten.com a lot, I got a very similar idea to the one of drsx
Talented people, regardless of education or experience, all over the world would love to participate. Potential for creating a unique niche that becomes a resource (freelance meeting place) lending talent on loan for more subject areas than a phone book directory... Please, don't get me started...
:)

When developed it would be worth a lot in my opinion.

Good luck

Thanks, thorin19.

That remindes me. I'd like to see if we can get drsx started on GhostWritten possibilities. What might a "resource lending talent" site look like in terms of back-end needs? Would standard forum software (say IPB or vBulletin) work or something more flexible?

The layout and scripting side is the area where I need the most help. Suggestions welcome. Thanks.

No reason to make the back-end complicated. Originally, I was thinking about blogger web site templates (Blogger In A Box). There is a better way... PHP is the way to go.

Most web host accounts include embarrassingly easy cPanel 1-click installs for creating a PHP web site.
-- InvisionBoard - a web bulletin board system
-- PHP-Nuke - advanced content management system
-- osCommerce - easy to use/configure shopping cart system
-- PhpWiki - site script everyone can collaborate on the content
-- phpBB - web bulletin board system
-- AdvancedGuestBook - PHP-based guestbook script

No longer a question of how but of which one to choose. Also, find somebody that can create simple graphics for your site indentity.

Getting started is alot easier than people expect. It's the content that is the brain fry and energy drain, not to mention maintaining and monitoring daily posts.

NamePros.com has people (volunteer/pay) that monitor and maintain this site. This is a PHP web site.

Later this month, I will be getting another web host reseller account. If you have time, I will create a web host account for you (no charge) . At least this will help you get started.
