...Hi,

Just a friendly end of year reminder to NEVER, and I mean NEVER use Godaddy for seeing if a name was available.

I actually did not, but in the process of ordering a domain name, my computer lost internet connection whileI was going to purchase a domain name and by the time it came back, the name was sold to somebody else.

Guess what? It was an obscure name and I had always known of Godaddy's reputation for this type of stuff.

Lesson learned, again. Take yer chances but be forewarned...

Someone told me about this long time ago but i didn't believed but he said about almost any popular domain site.

Is there any other host who do things like this?

I guess I never search for good domains since I have a "domains available to register" list and buy some domains a couple months after I checked availability on Godaddy.

hello infmoney. complement of the season.

OP, I have learnt about that long ago... I only use whois.com to check availability and have never experienced such.

...yep,

and http://www.leandomainsearch.com is not too shabby, either and dynadot.com for names you have in mind (godaddy seems to have bedbugs looking at yer names) but the whois is yer safest bet, indeed. If my internet access did not break down, I would have had the name instead of having it swiped from me.

Thanx...

What domain was it?

...I do not really want to reveal the domain name as there is a name on the whois, but she has a United States address zip code and phone number, yet puts down the country as Russian Federation.

Just in case it is a "co-inky-dink", I don't want to do anything but alert people to be cautious when searching for domain names. Mine was NOT a search but an attempted reg that failed when my internet connection got lost (I know why, so no conspiracy here, folks. had to do with something on MY end.) By the time I got reconnected, the dastardly deed was done. That quick...

Just be aware is all I wanted to convey...

Happened to me few times too. Searched a domain, found it to be available , came back few days later to see it registered . Don't know if search was not accurate or they were watching the domain searches.

were these domains fresh off the drop list? And were they then registered on godaddy?

if it really is a good domain, I would not be surprised someone regged it.

Are there some bad people working at godaddy? I am sure... but for the corproation itself... too much energy to focus on one domain.

One thing you need to consider is that sometimes Godaddy will show a domain is available when its not.

That has happened to me a few times.
Once it said Wallet.com was available, I actually was able to place it into my cart but I then checked the whois and of course it had been taken for years, and it continued to show it available for a few days.

Did you look at the registration date to see if it had been registered before you found it?

Front-running on someone, is very tempting. You cannot really take someone's word for it that they are completely 100% honest with you, especially if the guy says, "hey, i just work here!".

It's just like a stock broker who learns that his client will buy thousands of shares. What he does is, he first buys stocks for himself at a cheaper price ahead of his client.

Who can say that other so-called "domainer tools" out there, are not doing the same. You don't know how their "script" works.

...yeah, it was NOT registered until that day. I did not wait a second, I checked a different registrar then went to GD. I do not doubt that I would have been able to reg it when my problem arose during the process...

I do not mean to infer that GD as an entity does this as a practice, although it may be the easiest registrar to have these types of situations happen being as big as it is.

There just may be scripts out there with employees or other people waiting like cockroaches feeding off the crumbs that fall from the table.

I dunno, just use other means to find availability then reg at GD is all I am encouraging...
