Hey there,

I'm struggling to really edge into the Freelancing world and would truly love some advice on where to begin.

At the moment, I've been taking on a few jobs here and there... with my main income coming from coding PSD layout's into a xHTML/CSS... And charging a meer $15 for this.

How would I go about expanding and getting my name out there... Only having a few examples lead me to believe that it was worthless posting in the forums here, but no one wants to hire me without past work.

Truly struggling and would appreciate any ideas.

Kind Regards,

Have you tried posting on suitable freelancer websites? You may need to go in with low bids initially to build up a portfolio of work I'd say.

You should be able to get lots of work on Guru or Elance. Just bid the work cheap when you first get started, and as you get work under your belt, gradually go up. You will probably find some repeat customers that you could provide long-term work for.

IMO, these (above) are real good advice for getting established "on the Net."

  • Do you do original design too, or only the coding?
You could consider going out and selling your web design services to local businesses. This way you might have some premium accounts paying much better rates.

If you are just struggling to get started, then offer deep discounts to initial customers. There are couple of developers/designers in this forum that gave away their services initially for almost free. Once the reputation is built, you can start charging more..

Have you got a portfolio so people can see what kind of work you can do ?

If not, you could do some demo sites up in photoshop or offer your services for free until you have a decent portfolio.
