Why is it free though?

Because once you get a subscription to one magazine, they bombard you with calls trying to extend your subscription or give you "special deals" on other magazines... they're willing to give away one subscription for free if it means 3 other paid ones.

That might be true in some cases, but actually, I've never been "bombarded" by anyone after signing up for these free subs... (use a separate email account if this worries you)

Sometimes they give away subs to inflate readership for advertising...
