Forget the new PC, get a second monitor

Add a screen and you can get a big boost in productivity for less than $500. But be patient: The setup can be a pain.

The effect of multi-monitors on your computing life is immediate and stunning: The second monitor extends the desktop across both screens. So your mouse - and all things controlled by it - simply flies from one monitor to other. No clicks needed.

I've been useing that technique for photoshop for a couple years. Very handy having the image on one screen and the palettes/layers etc on the other.

I might go dual-screen sometime this year. btw...I own dual-screen.com which I originally bought because of the nintendo DS but personally I think it might be even better for a monitor company or a support site for dual-screen users.

I'm running dual screens at work, while at home i'm sitting with my lonely 17'' laptop display. Next investment? An Acer 22" flatpanel (as seen on Tiger) for $299, i guess being spoiled has it's downsides. Dual monitor is the way to go! :gl:

Im the same way - Once you go duel monitors, every other system seems inneficient. My laptop right now is just a single screen, I have 2 - used for different things. Ive been considering buying a new PC with Duel Monitors and a fast enough processor and memory to run all of my stuff - but I think I would prefer to go get the Treo and a new monitor for the lap top.

Ahhh - what to do - probably get the treo this week. I want it for when I head out to Trade show in Long beach.

I'd love to go dual. I have a 22" Widescreen LCD, having another would be excellent. Or I could maybe hook up my old normal 17" LCD monitor to have next to it.

As a developer I must say it is the greatest thing anyone could invest money into. While working with web development programs such as dreamweaver, you may have one screen as the developing side and the other as a rendered screen. It saves time and makes life way easier.

Probablity the best upgrade I have ever purchased for my CPU

Personally I'm not the sort of person interested in having more than one monitor just for one computer. Whilst many people obviously swear by it, it's just something that is not suited to me for various reasons.

Though one thing I am hoping on getting in the future at some point would be a pretty large LCD HD Monitor / TV in one.

It would be cool, but it doesn't fit the way I work. I am in the computer network consulting business. I travel between customers and I am rarely at my office. When I am home, I sit in front of the TV with my laptop on my lap.

I will utilize the idea in a couple of months. :) I agree to the comments.

I have been doing this for about 4 years now and I will never go back to a single. Wait until you guys make the switch! You are going to love it! It makes everything so much easier...

My next step is to try for 3 monitors. I have been considering this for sometime but I don't know if it is possible. Occasionally I work with my dual setup and next to that I have my 17in laptop going....

If you are a devloper or designer dual is the way to go. Even if you are just a pc freak you will love it. You can watch a movie on one and surf on the other....

Sweet, Steve. When I invest in the next Desktop I am going to get it RAMed out and buy an LCD Screen to go Dual Screen, plus a powerful processor, heck, I might just build my own setup.

I have never seen a Dual Screen Setup in Real Life before, but after Steves photo it is convincing me.

I'm trying to hold and avoid the purchase of two extra large LCDs monitors

I saw one LG 63" TV in a electronics marketplace and my eyes popped like roger rabbit

I feel my credit card slip out of my pocket....

-Steve

I was trying to figure out where they were, then realised I had to tilt my head sideways

Looks good! Though like I said, still not for me....

Though I do like the idea of a 63"er on its own...

Is it possible to setup on a laptop with another monitor?

Or a laptop to another laptop?

Since I received a couple of PMs asking me if that was possible to have two monitors with a Notebook, I found out how.

Here is the link of one manufacturer:
matrox.com/graphics/en/corpo/products/home.php

Interesting.

EDIT: I have No affiliation with them.

I've worked on computers with that before, and it's kinda handy for multimedia work (Photoshop, movie editing, presentations, etc.) But if you ask me, all-in-all it's just another one of those stupid "trendy" things that, unless you're an industry professional, it really won't amount to much.

I have a 24" Acer Monitor and it basically accomplishes the same idea. I can have two full windows open across my 1920x1024 screen. I usually keep my IM open on the right and firefox, chat, word, whatever on the left.
