Flash newbie issue

Hello,
I'm trying to take everything in my main timeline and put it into a symbol of its own. But when i repaste my original frames in place, create another layer and try to bring in the completed animation from the library onto the new layer I get an error message saying 'i cannot place a symbol inside itself.' I just want to make my movie more concise so that my main timeline hasn't got any frames on it. I know its possible, but I must be doing something wrong?

How about if you just highlight everything on your main timeline and press F8 to create a symbol out of it?

Sorry, don't have my flash open right now, but wanted to at least give an answer. I remember this once with me before but I think if you do as suggested above it may work for you.
