I prefer the .com anyway but it really depends on the name and how popular it is

For example..

I would prefer David.net to Portendorfer.com (yes, its a surname)

Lastname .com more value, easier to flip or to sell to an end-user.

.net, too many competitors now at cheaper cost.
.site .co .me .xyz .io .tech .pro .website .social .email

There are only about 2000 very popular boys/girls first names for West. This makes any of those in .com very very valuable. You could start instant business/brand on it, heck even adding s in the end is good for business (David's, John's, Julie's etc.). Depending where in 2000 they rank in popularity (and excluding some unique misspells that parents like), Name.com would go for $10K to $100K. Name.net, accordingly, would sell for $500 to $10K (ratio of 1/10-1/20).

There are probably tens of thousands of last names in the West, so just random not frequent one wouldn't be too valuable. Many of my LLLL.coms are someone's last name, which did not add any noticeable value to them.

But if it is a popular last name, that would be very valuable. Imagine the value of Smith.com, Robertson.com, Miller.com, Jones.com, Williams.com, Anderson.com, Moore.com, Harris.com, Gomez.com etc.

Nice - too bad it's from 1990. Hate to say it sometimes, but allot changes in 26 years, haha

I don't think that is relevant for surnames.

It is not like people change them, you can't assume some last names have better birth rates, immigration is less than .5% a year.

Overall believe Lastname.com will hold a higher value Firstname.net.

Also many " last names " have dual to multiple meanings, such as for example, " Green " , " White" ,
" Hill " etc and those " other meaning/s or alternative usages" may outweigh the value of the name per se.

I agree with Xavier. LastName.com for the win!

Buy both.

Think a common first name .net might bring in a higher sales price than an uncommon last name .com as more possible buyers. Personally I own my first/last name .com and last name .com. Love having my last name .com for email usage [email protected]

So depends on the name. I'd take Smith.com over an unpopular first name .net. But I'd take Joe.net over an unpopular last name .com.

I think in most cases the first name domain with out value a last name domain - except if the last name is "branded" like Tesla/Kardashian - I KNOW, I KNOW, One should never ever mention Nikola Tesla and any of the Kardashian's in the same sentence - They are not worthy.. but this was merely for illustrative purposes :)
