Best tips I can give are read lots before buying, avoid clever and creative names when you start out as they'll be great and fun to you, but no-one else (you can have valuable ones but knowledge of the market is needed for that).
Read the forums and other sites and before you buy a name make sure you are certain you know it's true value and it's not just a belief it'll be worth XXX or whatever
NameBio.com is good to poke around and see what has sold (just make sure you know what "similar" means, not "somewhere near" but really similar )
