I would take the pic out of the header of the flag, statue of liberty, and Dec of Indep. Go to istockphoto and find a free form image you can clip from the background and place on the beige background (or just leave empty). Currently looks unprofessional in comparison to the rest of the site.
Also, personal oppinion, I wouldn't advertise sooo many ads. It makes your site look underdeveloped. Even if you made your ad advertisements look like advertisements (ok that was really confusing). Basically I would advertise my advertising space with ads that looked like ads!?!?!?!
I like it though - Nice Job!

I would try to see if you could highlight the Feature Articles link to show the visitor that the scrolling news real can be controled by clicking on the Feature Articles list. This is the best way to combat that usability issue, another way would be to include a back / next function there.
There seems to be a conflict in the color scheme. The design chosen has a different style to that of your header I recommend really looking into either going one way or the other, both will just cause nausea.
Your BWR Score is 87.50% so not to shabby there. I would just work on cutting down the not so necessary in your HTML and work do a re-write of your meta description and keywords.

Great Overall Design
Good Content in the blog.
Cons:
The Colour scheme, IMO a Blue+ Light blue. Your website is meant to showcase change. So the use of positive colours is advised. (Green is also a Positive colour). Try changing your background to white/a light green.
The Logo doesn't fit the Web page Design, A Header with obama icon, the capitol and a Dollar bill or something like that.
Since you are using Wp-Vybe, I suppose it would be easier to change the colour.
