Extention: How Much Does It Matter?

With good keywords, how much (percentage wise) does the extention matter?

% wise I can't answer. It's too varied by IDN's and ccTLD's. But I have noticed that generally 4 letter extensions are the worst and 3 letter extensions are the best.

Unless it's .com, the extension isn't really THAT important.

.com = king.
.net/.org = 5%-10% of .com
.info = 2.5%-5% of .com
.us = 2%+ of .com
.biz = 1%-2% of .com (business keywords worth more like 2.5%-5%)
.co.uk, .de and .ca are up there in respectable value but not really sure where.

So hard to say... I mean what would I prefer. www.lotsofsex.com OR www.sex.org/.net?

However, I eventually came to a decision. Option 4.

There has been several SEO tests regarding this, and most of the conclusions are that search engines doesn't care about them at all..
A keyword is a keyword, and hyphens does in fact help as well if it's two or more words..

Don't some SE's penalize you for ccTLD's, placing them in say, the French version of the SE higher than the english version?

Some people try to fight it, but .com is king. Why? Typein Traffic/Recognition.
Anything else needs to be marketed.
But a .com? It markets itself.

It's all about...

it's all about recognition and the domain's ability to stick in one's mind. when you're appealing to the masses, who - i'm sorry - aren't generally bright most of the time anyway :not me: , ".com" is the extention that automatically pops in their minds when they think internet. I agree though that most 3 letter ext's can do quite well too...

Keywords do mean a little more in the domain than they do elsewhere in the url otherwise, but the extension really doesn't matter in gTLD's. Having the keyword twice in the URL is even better such as domainkeyword.com/keyword.htm. However, doing this multiple times in more subdirectories may get you penalized or at least be ignored.

The way I see it is that keywords and the TLD are two different things. Having .com gets you more type ins since it's the defacto default. stacking .com with a good keyword is only better.

I think it is a combination of keywords, and the extension, but it kinda matters in each individual case. For example, something like SportsIllustrated.com , the extension is very important, because if you had the .info extension , it would not make much sense. However, something like webmaster.com , the extension doesnt matter much. I would say generally though, the extension is about 50% of the domain.

at 5.2 less the good ole 63% makes it attractive.
