Expired domain resources

I'm interested in grabing some expired domains, hopefully with some pr and/or link popularity.

Where I can get good expired domain lis ( for free a big plus), also is there any good software for domain research.

Just a word of advice, but it doesn't hurt to keep an eye on the expired names forum here from time to time. Granted, you won't always pick up top level domains, it's a good place to start.
