Expanding menus?

Hi,

what does it take to make an expanding menu? (i'm not sure what the proper term for it is, i'm talking about a menu where you click on one of the options and more options open up beneath it)
basically what i would like to know is what does it take and how much do i need to know in order to make such a menu.

thanx alot for the help but thats not what i'm looking for.

what i need is more along the lines of this i dont need something fancy like theirs thats just the only link i could think of off the top of my head. i dont need any fancy graphics what i need is pretty much just plain text, but i need it to expand/ collapse.

if i'm not mistaken that one is made in flash but as i said i dont need the fancy graphics, just plain text probably with a backround image.
