Guys please give me a leg up...

I want to give my users a gmail for domains email account bolted onto our website - you know something like [email protected], [email protected]

google tell you to set the following MX records:

MX Server address Priority
ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM. 1
ALT1.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM. 5
ALT2.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM. 5
ASPMX2.GOOGLEMAIL.COM. 10
ASPMX3.GOOGLEMAIL.COM. 10
ASPMX4.GOOGLEMAIL.COM. 10
ASPMX5.GOOGLEMAIL.COM. 10

Now, before we do this, the site performs a lot of server side generated emails (a/c reminders, registration emails, forgot password etc) so if we change the MX records to that of google, will this disable our ability to send server generated emails??

No, just make that your SPF records are set properly... or just don't set them.

SPF records..?? Not an expert with mx records / email etc...

Those are your side, Google gives you their side. Nothing will be played with on your side, this just makes it so all incoming email will be directed to Google, basically.
