People were registering lots of worthless short domains (random 5L dot coms, 6-7-8N dot coms and so on) and a lot of them were doing it using coupons through which registrars lost money.
Registrars do this for marketing purposes, hoping that people will keep domains with them for years to come and that they’ll make money on the retail renewal fees.

Article lacking depth and dates - when were these coupons issued that you're talking about? Are we talking last year or a long time ago? how many were issued and how much did this cost the registrars? Do you have any links to verify all this? Are you saying these .com offers in any resemble the 1 cent or free offers now being run on the ngtlds? Think we all need a bit more info.
