The price increases are going to continue -- 7% per year from Verisign. That is actually still pretty good value for non-trash domains. It may also improve the expiry streams as some registrars use this as a pretext for price increases. At this time, Epik has no plan to raise prices for .COM.

Two things as tactical points:

1. Forever domains at Epik are $399 but we can do bulk deals for less.

2. For bulk transfers we can also do deals, e.g. we have done $6.99 promos and happy hours in the past. If folks want that, we'll see what we can do.

The Versign price increase is not good news. Epik will do its part to try to soften the blow!

He is saying that a $399 payment for (1) domain, because renewal fees are going up 7% (still under $10/year), is not a solution for a domain investor.

It saves you no money, in fact you have to spend way more money. It would take decades to make financial sense.

@Future Sensors

I can't get involved in the internal matters of how the prices are set up since I am not part of Epik, but in general the retail prices are higher at all registrars for end users due to the fact that most regular people only have a few domains compared to domainers who might have hundreds or thousands of them.

IMO

If you're wise, you renew your domains yourself. Renew your best domains years ahead. Nothing special about this. This thread started about funding Verisign. Let's not fund registrars doing these tricks on us, domainers.

Rob isn't helping the community with retail pricing for end-users.

I guess you should have said:

Rob isn't helping the community with retail pricing that are more fit for end-users.

No, that's not what I wanted to say, oldtimer.

If you are a domain investor, it makes no sense for reasons other than which have already been discussed -

1.) Why would you want to add a $399/cost to a domain? When you sell a domain all that extra expense is wasted. You really want to pay the bare minimum on renewals when it comes to resale, not add expenses upfront.

2.) For the forever registration to carry over the buyer would have to keep using Epik. Epik has an oversized influence in the domainer world, especially on NamePros. However, compared to well known registrars like GoDaddy and others they are really minor players. The odds of an end user wanting to use Epik are low, vs their own preferred registrar.

The reason of Epik's influence on NP is because Rob is allowed to spam to try and grow his company with domainers and dissing well established registrars like GoDaddy who do not need NP and waste their time. Spamming a thread with irrelevant promotional posts is a waste of time for us all. Peace out.

I'll probably be looking to move my top 10 names to Epik by years end. Namecheap doesn't offer much value to domains your aren't currently developing.

Here we go again:
- Advertise and promote your company in a discussion thread
- Bad mouth other company - Godaddy in this case

Unprofessional - When will you stop this bad practice?

Grandstanding & virtue signaling.

Some Registrars charge twice that.

always love to pick on Rob, CEO who stands front of his product & I believe —fighting for us. “Where is GD CEO?” Ditto for countless rest. Rob is humble, good values us more than any.
Godaddy isnt helping anyone with their Hostage tax (free if xxx dns (sound familiar?) paid $100+ (autopay) for year of $8 .com gddy “wholesale” “mugford included” free of charge.

Fugazi, and hypocrisy. Rob, model is ingenius. The backlash against him feels more personal Wonder why, could be something with politics?

@Rob Monster!! Believe! momentum shifting!

It was pretty easy this time, just presenting what Rob has said earlier about this.

Have you seen the margins he mentioned for this product?

No need to make this an Epik fan thread again, imo.

I still like you, but Epik is no God to me.

Just to clarify, NP members pay $8.49 for .COM, all the time, no promo code required. Sometimes we do promos, e.g. there is discussion of $6.99 .com registration and transfers.

And if it can be free, we do our best to make it free. As a result, the value for money is unmatched. More details here: http://epik.com/free

Some registrars are going to use the price increase to milk the cow. Some have already started. Epik intends to remain the pro domainer's best friend. It is a core strategy. That was the point.

Pretty sure he was referring to the margins on the forever stuff...aka $399 upfront, not standard domain renewals.

Anyone can renew their own .COM for (10) years right now for say $90. So you are paying an extra $300+ for the promise that Epik will renew the domain after that point, a decade from now.

The financial interest for Epik is obvious.

How many decades will it take for that to make financial sense to the buyer?

Here is a real scenario from this week. A widow calls about her suddenly deceased husband's domain portfolio. The widow had no foggy idea which domains to keep, had already lost one valuable domain, and had literally no money with which to fund renewals. This scenario has been happening often enough before COVID. My forecast is that it will happen more often post-COVID. Forever domains fix that. For the high value domains, it is an easy choice. For the guy who wants to play Russian roulette every year with domains worth more than $10K, they can do so but just make sure the spouse knows the game plan.

I totally agree with this, and I highly commend Epik for the service.
First of all, it is very true that is isn't for everyone, specially buy and sell domainers, it might not make sense at all, but for developers and corporate owned domain names and brands, this is very useful.

I wish there we're a forever web hosting like this too, even if it is ridiculously expensive, at least the assurance is there.

You might respond to me for saying the word "assurance", it might be true the company could be handed over someday, but the obligation should be passed as part of the company agreement on the client, otherwise, it's their liability, and for me that's enough to call it assurance.

I also believe we are still on topic, it really is a provided available solution regards to the continuous rise in renewal, but again, not applicable to everyone specially for buy and sell domains. I like the discussion and reasoning of each, but hate to says some words got personal.

With dotcom prices starting to head up, are you operating a large portfolio? What steps will you take?

My portfolio is too large...lots of okay, many good and quite a few really good names...only a handful I would call great.

Those in the great category, along with those intended for my personal/professional use, will be renewed for a few years taking advantage of the excellent pre-fund pricing at Epik.

I am looking forward to us reaching the 100 mark so Rob will extend a transfer deal...I've got dozens of names at other registrars I am ready to move.

I'm not so sure how much I trust the promises of businesses (Dynadot included) who don't have a physical location, and opt to use a UPS storefront/mailbox instead.

WOW! Thanks @Grilled now I don't trust Epik or Dynadot at all anymore.
