I was just signing up for a new account and entered my email address incorrectly name@ instead of the correct names@. The confirmation email arrived. I am not using "name" singular as an alternate address. No biggy, just didn't realize this was possible. Wonder how this could happen? :|

If you are running the mail through your own domain, this will always happen. Each domain that is set up on email through cPanel or whatever has a catchall address that when mail arrives at a domain it doesn't bounce it if no user has that name. I take it you are the admin for the domain as it is the admin that receives it.

Check some of the spam that you no doubt get and you will see that this is how a lot of spammers work. For example, I have no recollection of ever setting up bigp***[email protected] but apparently all the spammers have heard of it

Thanks Benson. Yes, the email is through my domain httpaddress.com so that's it -and- also explains how the SPAM that hasn't yet been filtered, can also get through.

I use this catchall to keep track of where my email is comming from. When I signup for things with my email address, I make the name@ part related to the service. So if I signup on ebay, I make my email [email protected]. This way I can also keep track of who is selling my email address.
