Hello , I read a blog where it states that in 2012 Goggle updated their algorithm regarding exact matched domains and since then their value has decreased drastically due to decrease in ranking.

Is this true?

Thinking that you can rank a website because it has keywords in the domain name is a 10 year old tactic.

Now turn to today, your question is, are emd domains worth anything?

The answer is yes they are.

Two reasons:
1) Having the keywords in the domain name is still a factor in the algo, however little that may be.
2) Keywords in the domain name attract the right traffic and eyes on your "brand". Its human intuition.

For example, if I am looking for a horror film I might search for horror films. A result might come up at horrorfilms.com as an example, that would probably be enough to get a visit from me.

EMDs are still working fine. Try to google this: HTML COLOR CODES

unrelated to SEO but the answer is yes, of course they have value.

firstly having a great domain instills trust in the users visiting a site. Would you buy a hoverboard from hoverboards.com or would you buy from ejdunhtfnj.com?

secondly, exact match domains get decent type in traffic, which is basically getting free visitors to your site without having to pay for marketing.

EMD's for the most part are easier to remember which means repeat customers

I remember that update like it was yesterday as at the time I had a bunch of exact word matched sites ranking high in the SERPS and getting consistent traffic. Once they roll out the update basically the automatic power these domains had to rank was decreased.

As mentioned by others though they still have some value and I prefer these names when I go about it in the domaining aspect of it as they are easy to remember. I don't worry about ranking anymore as I feel Google will always come up with a "new" algorithm as they always have been.

The old school thinking of focus on providing good content on your website, make it a real site instead of a bunch of mini sites with the sole purpose of ranking for Google. If you go about it naturally you will rank but it should not be your priority, it should be to build an audience and a brand.

EXACTLY!

EMDs still have advantage, although not so huge as they used to. However, they still DO have advantage (if all other factors are the same).
But it is very important that it is human psychology that you will most likely click on HorrorMovies.com instead on Scary.com if you searched for "horror movies". You get exactly what you searched for and the first choice of the most will be to click on their exact match, even if it was second or third result in SERP, as long as it was in their sight of view.

EDIT: One example of psychology.......if you are interested in live snooker scores and type "live snooker scores" in Google you might get ESPN.com on #1, Snooker.com on #2, LiveSnookerScores.com on #3 etc. (if all three website would be of the same quality SEO LiveSnookerScores.com would be on #1). However, no mather that LiveSnookerScores.com is on third position most people will likely click on it than on these other domains as they would feel it would be easier to get direct and quicker info they searched for. ON ESPN.com you might find that too, but with exploring the site.

The problem with SEO is that people mostly use Wordpress templates or Graphic river templates for example. Google sees this as duplicate content.

So its not a simple question to answer regarding the EMD and its value. So many factors I guess their algo would look something like EMD+Template=SEO attempt, whilst for example just EMD without template is perhaps more "legit" in their eyes.

This is just based on my empirical evidence in my SEO efforts, that are nothing to write home about LOL but the EMD was not to blame IMO.
