Hi all,

I recently got myself a .ec domain name, and was wondering what you think of the extension and the market for them

The domain I got was Amor.ec

Ecuador is a spanish speaking country and Amor=Love in Spanish.

Google trends ranks Ecuador as the 3rd highest searchers for 'Amor'.

I have the name on Sedo currently, but if anyone can help with me selling this name, or help with a valuation I would be greatful :D

I've got a couple of .ec names. They are not too expensive and many good keywords are still available.

Transfer fees.

I have a few, but won't renew them, because of the transfer. If you sell a .ec domain, there is a transfer fee:

Fees for domains transfers

When a domain is transferred from one Registrant to another, a fee of $100 for Ecuadorians and $150 for non-Ecuadorians will be payable. To these fees, 12% IVA, Valued Added Tax must be added according to Ecuador Tax Law, including non-Ecuadorians.

Also:

the NEW USER shall pay the corresponding fee, according the Registry Form, the Agreement and the Complementary Documentation.
2. Fee. - There must be paid the Transference fee determined in NIC.EC Policies, for this Transference.

If this wasn't bad enough, you have to fill out forms online. It's not automatic, like other domain extensions.
A new buyer should be made aware of these charges. Many times that can kill a deal. Too much hassle for me. Kinda like a .nu domain.

I would be willing to cover transfer costs for any buyer I come across.
Yes it is a pain, but the registry have been quite quick with any queries I have had in the past, so it would not be much hassle.

I wont try to develop until about 4-5 months into the domains life, see if i can get a worth while flip, else I could develop it into something, but what I have no idea.. I just thought the keyword could not go by my eyes. 'Amor.com.ec' is taken

It' great you are willing to pay the transfer fees, but I don't think most buyers would be willing to do that. I checked, I still have Forum.ec, looking for a good home!
The few .ec domains I had listed on www.Sedo.com , didn't get many views. DSl.ec, and Virus.ec , and many other great keywords aer available. Just doesn't seem to be much interest for them.
www.Nambio.com doesn't even list a .ec domain sold!
It all depends on what you plan to do with them. If you plan to develop, as you are, that's great.
As an investment, the numbers speak for themselves. .ec isn't a domain to try to make money on. Of course, there's always the exceptions. I'm sure someday there will be a decent .ec sale.
Good luck

Amor pars with 'sexo' on google trends for searches in Ecuador, maybe I am relying too much on high search volumes for this name, and forgetting about the lack of market for ccTLDs that are not widely hosted

NVD - nice to read about these names, are there any requirments as you have to have a local contact? I would be interested to see how many people have internet access there.. I know geographically its not as big as some other countries. Thanks for the info.

Unsure MJ, I dont think there is any requirements, however they do ask for a photocopy of some ID (passport, driving license), i refused to send them any for obvious reasons that I didn't trust them :P and they still let me have the domain.

There are HUGE transfer costs though (nic.ec) I dont know about Instra though. upto $150. :(

Just sold the name on Sedo I had.. and the buyer (after sending payment to sedo) decided to pull out of his offer.. because of something to do with him being unable to find a registrar 'suitable' enough for him.. Maybe he should have looked BEFORE offering me 400euros for it.

I also have a couple of .ec and .com.ec domains. Most of them only have small traffic and the traffic does not convert that well, at least not when parked.

Wow another sedo horror story... Even after they pay, they can still back out... nice to know to continue avoiding sedo :)

Thanks for the info - sorry for your loss :(

Yeah, I've been searching around, it doesnt look like .ec is very popular.. maybe its like the .us to americans but worse? Maybe they just know .com mostly.
