E-commerce question

Hi guys,

I'm going to be making a simple e-commerce website by myself without the aid of a webmaster. With my limited skills, here is what I see my options as.

1. Make a beautiful template website and put links on it that say "shop now" etc so the customers can go to a www.blah.com/cart link so they can order things in the cart I chose to use.

2. I can just make a website using the shopping cart and its horrible cookie cutter templates. Its harder for me to use them and they dont look original at all, but when they get to my site, they will immediately be able to add items to the cart and buy them.

Any suggestions which one is better in your guys's opinions? or is there an easy way to make a nice looking site and insert the add to cart stuff into it....

What it be possible for you to build up your skills? I suspect that such an approach could prove useful.
