Dynamic Images

Could someone please explain to me how you go about making dynamic images. Basically, I want to have an image that somehow has a preset location within it and preset text properties, then queries a mySQL database to return the user's name and displays the name within the image. It's for a website that would have user profiles, so I want to incorporate this image into the layout, but have it change dynamically for each user.

Any ideas or a point in the right direction would be much appreciated.
