Domainers' poker tournament?

I think every domainer has a bit of that gamble bug in himself/herself.
So while sitting on the toilet, I was thinking of creating a poker tournament where the prizes are .... domain names.I think it would be a nice place where people could talk and play together.

I need inputs on the idea. What do you think? Would you participate? What are the current legal restrictions on running online poker tournaments?

I am planning to put all my knowledge and time in this project if I receive positive feedback. How would you like to see it? And what is the current legislative background for running online poker tournaments?

Of course I would buy a valuable domain name for the prize so that everybody recognizes its value (an LLL.com or premium LLL.net).

Do you think it is a good idea? Any ideas are welcome.

Oh, btw I got a domain name too, dnpoker.com. there is no feeling like that, when the first domain you think of is available. I was more surprised that it was available as the .net and .info is taken.

Well thanks for the quick reply. I am not looking for great donations, the biggest asset there could be is our time spent to give inputs and ideas.

Maybe I run a bit too quick, but first I think that I will buy a premium LLL.net as the prize.

Regarding technical issues I need to ask a friend of mine who made some poker sites before, and then I will come back to this thread. I admit I am a newbie in developing domains, so I will need to rely on him.

- If you know any scripts that might be helpful please PM me.
- What about the legal issues? I will need to research on this, as I am not aware of the international laws regarding online gambling.
- What about the domain name? Does DNPoker.com sound ok? Is it memorable?
- Or if not an LLL.net what kind of domain names do you see reasonable to offer. I would stick with LLL's because they have a recognized value amongst all domainers and there is always demand for them. Do you think otherwise?
- I would like to build it as a community poker site. If you have any ideas on how it should look, or ideas regarding anything feel free to PM me or post them here.
- would texas holdem be ok?

And Justin, thanks for your help, I will keep you updated. I think there will be a need to test the site before its actual launch, so I count on you.

Thanks for the support, I will come back later with more info, I am excited about it. Now... I have to go back to work :)

Alex -- why don't you charge a $10-$20 entry fee for the participants so it will help you fund the prize? Perhaps you could find a sponsor who would pay to have the tournament sponsored after them.

Sounds like a great idea! :tu:

this will be interesting to watch it's progress...

Might I suggest that you sign up for some of the free gambling affiliate programs and read their rules and TOS... and see what countries they permit etc...
(that way alot of the legal work will have already been done for you) - but still research elsewhere also...

dnpoker.com for the actual site - sounds good...

do you ever watch the Poker After Dark - TV show ??

Thanks Steve, I will probably have a buy-in, and I will make a poll for the exact amount to be charged, so it should be ok for participants too, and for the project on the long term too. It should depend also on the prize too, since an LLL.net or an LLL.com is not the same.

Patricia, I will sign up for some affiliate programs and will research them. I always do profound work. I hope I will be done by weekend, and will have a more clear idea of the final site.

Thanks for the comments guys and gals, it means a lot to me.

This is a great idea, you could charge like $10
i've seen a poker script that costs like $14.95 a month and you integrate it into your forum, you could do that and then charge people and play that way, i can't remember the script name tho, sorry.
i'm sure as hell in tho!

In domaining its the person who works the hardest and the person who is the first to reg the name that gets it.

In poker its the professional that wins the game almost every time.

So for myself why play or pony up to pay to play when I know there will be top notch professional poker players who will snag the domain?

Players like Danielr, ( who really needs the moeny btw, lol) will take the prize. Why not skip all this and give it directly to a pro, they will win anyway, You can bet on it.

Nice idea to get the community involved, but is it fair?

Did you just ask if gambling was fair? :hehe:

No, lol.

I am only pointing out that most of us who want to win a domain here will be playing against some professionals, all they do is eat, sleep and play poker. Just saying these things so other domainers will see that winning is a slim chance if they are green.

In poker, luck plays a small role when you are playing with folks who play in poker tournaments all the time. They take home the cash time after time and they are playing other professionals.

I am just saying that most part time poker players will be left standing with maybe their socks on, lol. It will be a easy win for a top notch pro. Have you thought of this?

And the winner is the domainer who plays once in a while with his buddies, not.
How fast will they beat us when we have little or no poker experience?

Roderick, I understand your concern, but I will want that the tournament to be played by domainers, so by people who eat sleep have a job and love domaining. So basically NP members would be allowed to play poker there. Not people who are so professionals in poker. Of course there are better and worse poker players (I will surely loose), but I think we all think of it as a fun.

Thanks James for the info about the script, I will do a deep search on google to find that out. Otherwise we will go in other poker rooms.

I have played about 6 times and won twice :D. I played against some good people. Some newbies might come out and win. :)

I dont expect to see poker professionals in the game - besides, I think theyll be bussy recovering from the WSOP (which I believe is going on right now)

Thanks for chronosel for finding the script, and for James for pointing that out. It can be found at: http://www.pluginpoker.com .
However the $14.95 price is limited to a 5 chair table. Or $24.95 for a 10 chair table. But this would be too limitative, so probably I will have to look for alternatives.
