Guys
I've been hearing more about domain theft lately. I fear it is getting to be a bigger problem as thieves realize the value of domains. I'm interested to hear what we can do to prevent theft of our names.

Can we get a sticky going which has useful tips on how to keep your names safe (other than setting Reg Lock)?

Thanks

A couple of things come to mind:
Push instead of transferring.
Don't push until you receive funding.
Use escrow service for sales.
Change your passwords monthly at your registrar.
When logging into your control panel at your registrar, only use a computer that you are 100% certain doesn't have spyware on it (so your passwords are safe)

Passwords passwords passwords

!@#$%^&*() include as many as you can and always go the max a registrar will allow

ie: namecheap 25 character password

use WHOIS protect as any thief already has some of your info they need to steal your domain whithout protection.

Good advice: if everyone used strong passwords, domain theft wouldn't be a serious problem.

What I like about GoDaddy is that you can change both your username (login) and password as often as you like. Good stuff.

U must be joking.

The online world is filled to the brim with scammers and other crumbums who do nothing else but try to steal other people's stuff. You would not believe the number of phishing attacks and hack attempts that some of my sites get on a daily basis.

We are not paranoid. You're just not thinking properly :hehe:

If you had a domain that was worth a lot of money, you'd be making sure that you were secure, too. Or maybe not. That's your own call. :imho:

The internet is full of thieves simply because they don't have to physically go out in person to commit crimes. I would submit that there is more theft and crime online than there is in the real world (per capita).

That is a good thing. As far as I can see, namecheap only allows you to change your password. I guess to cahnge your userID you have to emil them. Not sure, though.

They do have the option to be emailed everytime your account is logged into which is a nice little security feature, I guess.

Just take the usual precautions and you'll be fine.

What if you have hundreds and hundreds of domains under one registrar in one account?

If you were a theif you could just unload them all for a few hundred bucks (just a buck or 2 each) and that might be worth the effort, then.

still the burden of password complication is better than the loss of any names.

Just dont do anything stupid. People lose things because people are just plain stupid. I bet I can steal hundreds of accounts just based one peoples stupidity. Don't tell anyone you password and always get paid before you give. Don't give out any information you're sketchy about or do anything weird that the buyer asks you to do.

Too paranoid? If anything, we are not paranoid enough. Last week I had my NameCheap account stolen for a little while, with around 20 domains on it. I managed to get them back though, but it took me a couple of days to do it.
I think that with a strong password and Whois protection, you should be pretty well secured against it.
