Domain Registration - Duration & Price??

Hi

Total novice here so sorry if this is a silly question!

I want to register a domain and the hosting company has options on how long to register for.

If I choose one year it seems to work out cheaper per year than choosing multiple years. Is that normal?

If I only choose 1 year now, how does the host decide the price to re-register in a year's time? i.e. if the site became popular (in my dreams!) would this hike the price?

Thanks
Fiona

Hello,

As far as i know if you pay $5 per the domain name(.com especially)for the first year, then the next year's renewal price should be around $10-15.
This calculations makes one domain name price at $7-9.
First year registration prices generally differ from company to company,it's called as a promotion.
The registrar can't overprice the domain name because of you have a popular website belong to it.

Hmmm...
The first year is priced at $9, but when I go to register 2 years it jumps to a total of $39!
Any thoughts?

Maybe, you add an hosting package to your order too?
If not,you can try to search other more popular domain name registrars.

word of advice: don't register your domain with your hosting company. Pick a separate registrar, like Namecheap or Godaddy, to register your domain.

Usually, they offer the $9 for the first year as a "come-on" discount. Renewal price is actually $39. That's how domains are priced with Yahoo or Network Solutions. Why they charge $39 dollars for renewal when others like Godaddy only charge 8 bucks... i have no idea!!!!

But the usual technique is, you bite the first year discount, then transfer to a cheaper registrar before your domain expires. Usually, they are betting that you will forget to renew your domain, so they will "automatically" renew the domain for you and charge you $39 about a month before your domain expiry.

So what you should do is set the auto-renew button on your registrar account to "manual". Then transfer your domain more than 1 month before your domain expiry.
