Will a domain name with two keywords rank well in serp for the keywords?

Ex- widget.

Say Red widget is a keyword and blue widget is another.

So will redbluewidget.com rank in serp for both the keywords? Or will it have any bad effect on serp?

Depends on the keywords IMO -

Yes - "any" 2 and 3 word domain can rank well in the SERP's.

How many people bother searching for the term ?
Real Estate realestate.com < Very Nice
Fur Balls furballs.com < Funny - but not as nice

How much competition does the keyword have ? Make sure you also add "quotes" to your google results ;)

http://www.google.com/search?q="fur+balls"

If a search phrase is being searched for 10 times a day - and there are 2 million other sites/pages listed for the same term - What chance do you have of getting their attention ?

I am looking forward to make a blog on affiliate products. I am targeting fifth sixth ranking keyword for the niche. One of the keywords, say, โ€œred widgetโ€ is searched more than 4000 times/day according to digitalpoint keyword tool. The other keyword, say โ€œblue widgetโ€ is searched only may be 100 or 200 times a day. All the other sites in that niche are direct sellers. So what are my chances to rank with the domain name in serp?

I am also looking forward to regularly update the blog with fresh content.

theoretically, it should help rank for both "red" and "blue", but keep in mind that all these things can be gamed, and Google knows it... so other things are starting to be considered much more important than whether the text is in the URL-- i.e.: anchor text, etc.

Depends on the incoming links you get and other factors really .. without the Domain/keywords it's nearly impossible to say.

BTW - You need to edit your signature - We only allow 4 lines per signature here ;)

There is much debate about this. I can only offer my personal experience and also my take on the numerous articles that I've read.

RedWidgets.com is going to help you quite a bit in getting ranked in Google for the exact search term "red widgets"

RedBlueWidgets.com is not going to help you nearly as much for the search term "red widgets", although it will help you a little bit.

Naturally, you need to take care of the rest of the SEO as well, otherwise the domain name will not do you any good at all.

Some personal experiences on my own sites: vlcd.info which is ranked #13 out of 100,000+ for "vlcd" and nalmefene.info, ranked #13 for "nalmefene" out of 73,000. The point is these are new sites, just a couple months old, with very little backlinks.

Of course, these are not very competitive keywords, as someone said it's infinitely easier to get ranked for specific niche terms rather than the huge search terms.

One thing to remember is that redwidgets.com will help you immensely getting ranked for the search term "redwidgets" - that is, without the space. There seem to be quite a few people who type in their terms like that, without spaces. If you have a name with good PPC and nice search terms, you will get some traffic this way.

My personal experience: distancelearningmba.org (ranked #1 if you omit the spaces in your search), which gets the odd visitor now and then exactly like this, and gets high PPC so covers its own costs and funds a couple of other domain renewals, too. I have some others like this, too.

Good luck,
Josh

One more thing came to mind. The tld extension is of utmost importance when optimizing for a local market. You have an immense advantage when you own, say, domainbiz.de over domainbiz.info or domainbiz.com if your targeted audience is using google.de for search.

Which brings us to the .us extension. At this time Google does not seem to favor the .us extension over the global tld's for searches done in the u.s. But if Google starts to bring the .us extension to even near the level of other ccTLD's in importance in local searches, the demand for the .us TLD will rocket. Of course, in the u.s. the searches are done using google.com, not google.us, so who knows. Maybe they'll promote google.us for u.s. specific searching -> .us value increases

Just speculating here.
