Domain Name Trading!

Hey everyone,

Ive been watching the domain name business for quite some time now, But I havent actually got to buying any domain names yet, and I would like to, but I dont know where to start.

I want to do this as a hobby to make a bit, ( or alot  ) of money on the side.

Is there any way that I could make a real profit with domain name trading when there are already so many people snapping up domains a quickly as you could say "I want that domain!!!"

Is it best to collect and park domains, or sell them on?

Should I use backordering services?

Who is the quickest registrar when it comes to snapping up names when they appear available in the whois search?

- Luke

What registrar would you say is the fastest as whipping up the name you want?

The problem is is that I dont hav much of a budget, so If I bought a domain name that I thought was good, but I wasnt able to sell, that loss of money would mean quite alot to me!

Pardon my frankness, but you have been a member here for 9mos and should, by now, have a handle on this question and if not, should know how to use the search function well enough to narrow your very broad and basic question down. You also might receive a bit more sympathy by posting in the Newbie section.

I always buy to sell :tu: . To be honest I have only been around a couple of months and have over 100 names now D-: This has been done with a very, very small budget. I must admit, and some of you will know, ... most of the names I got to start with were sh**t :td: but with alot of reading and alot of members help I have, I hope come to sort of understand (as much as you can) about what sells :tu:

Anyway names "DO" matter pick carefully :D

Did you get your first domains by using a backorder service, or did you just find an available domain that you thought might make you a good profit, and then go to a registrar and register it there?

Wow 100 names seems like alot, doesnt this cost you alot to renew them each year? More than what you make out of sales?

There is plenty of good names left to register you just need to find them. :)

Seems you are interested in backordering but I would say if your budget is as low as you said, just forget it. However I can give you a quick recommendation, pool.com, clubdrop.com and snapnames.com and sometimes namewinner.com are popular backordering system. Usually if you want a name so much and you should backorder it at several, if not all, websites like above. So you know how much you cost and what is worse, if they snapped the one for you sometimes you still need to enter an auction with other bidders.
So basically, you'd better start by registering new domains. And that depends on your insight experiences and sence of the domain market.
However another way you could take a try is to reg those extinguishing domains. For instance, 3 letter .com, 3 letter .net, 3 letter .info, 3 letter .biz are all registered that means those who own this names will sell them at a higher price and the value will go up and up, unless some extreme circumstances. So maybe now it's your best chance to grab some 3 letter .us names and hold them for 1-2 yrs you will at least double your budget. At that time I am sure it is not your only way to invest in domain business.

You also have to remember that if you really want to make money off of domains, then you will most likely lose some money too. It's hard to sell every single name you register. But if you plan ahead, and research before buying each domain, then they'll have a good chance of selling in the long run.
But, expect to lose money on bad registrations in the beginning. Almost all of us have.

Yu don't have to start off by registering a domain, you can always look for a good deal, and buy one.

The safest way is to buy a name for something you have an interest in. First, you will probably have some idea of the potential market, it's potential uses, and potential users. Second, If you don't sell it as a name, it's something you could develop and sell or keep later.

My first ones were names of a new horseracing course being built in the uk (greatleighs) regged at godaddy. I then found this place and the rest is history :xf.love:

Only started regging them a few months back so no renewals as yet :hehe:

Then there are those of us who are VERY lucky, and made some good choices and decisions to begin with hehe B-)

I think that it is a matter of developing a strategy of how you want to make money and don't waste money by spending in areas where you haven't put much thought or research.

Know who your customers are. Do they have big budgets? Why are they interested in domains? Do they know much about domains? Is there trademark dangers? Do they require promotion strategys?

Know what you want to do with the domains. Are you going to develope a site? How much time per domain are you going to put in? Are you going to try and make PPC income? Do you want your main income through websites or selling names?

Know your promotion strategy. How do you make sure that your market grows? Do you price low for more cashflow or high for more profit? How much will you negotiate? How do your customers find your domains?

Know your domains. Are you building a diverse range or a specialised range? How are you going to know what is a bargain and what isn't? Are you keeping informed enough to beat your competition to finding the better domains first.

Know how you are perceived. Your reputation is what you can build on with time. Take advantage of people and you may end up losing in the end. The best way to make money in the long run is to be a trustworthy person and that usually takes years.

Be Patient and consistent.I think that it is great that you can spend 9 months resisting the urge to buy domains. This means that you have spent time getting to know things without being burnt. But you also need to test ideas and keep moving forward in order to make progress. You have to keep working on your strategies and fine tuning them to make sure that you are keeping profitable and growing in the right ways. I have three strategies that I am working on. One is profitable, one isn't and the third can be profitable if I need it to be but I am investing into it to increase it's profitability and so it isn't. I don't expect to make a lot of money in the next 2 years, but I'm planning long term.
