Have you guys ever seen domain names sell much higher than what you'd think they would? I know even stupid domains sold for mega dollars during the goldrush days. I know you guys know what you are talking about with your domain appraisals and what have you.....but in the end, is'nt it all about what the end-user is willing to pay for it? Like back in the day....would any of you appraised mp3audiobooks.com at 8 mil?? Even 1mil? After all...kind of a long domain name, Right?

I've seen 'em sell of higher and lower than the "median" of appraisals. I've seen some never sell, and some sell for much more than I would have ever thought. I've seen a lot of appraisals dead-on, as well ... over the course of many years.
It IS about how much a potential buyer will pay, sure. It also depends if it's "Retail/End user" or "Wholesale/Reseller" interest.
However, getting your domain appraised gives the seller some power ... and a general price range from which to work, IMHO. Just as the buyer is doing his/her leg work ... the sellor, too, must perform his/her "due diligence" ... relying on any one appraisal from any one source will simply not give you enough power during hopeful and eventual negotiations.
Know your domains well. Understand their meaning and particular niche. Know it's upside, as well as it's faults. Do further research. IMHO, appraisals are the begining of the marketing and Sales process.
Best of Luck.

Appraisals are good for an end user sale. Resellers have their own value system. The key to any domain sale is knowing who can use the domain commercially. Potential commercial use then you can get decent money for even some dogs.

Domain Appraisels are to guide you. Dont bother paying for any of those services. The ones I have seen are too high. They will give you a better figure then what you should expect because they want business. You paying them to hear their names suck is not going to get them repeat business.

Very true

most if not all "professional" paid domain apprasials are done by crappy people that dont know squt about domain and how much they are worth or they use software that is 3+ year old
and we all know how much the value has changed in 3 year
I wouldNT pay 50c fr an apprasal as i can get free ones in this forum and many other and i know roughtly how much my names are worth

There is a domain industry. Many people try to create a appraisal industry, too. Yet, no domain name has a intrinsic value - Only the value that somebody effectively pays. Appraisals are totally worthless because they are just advisory, and dictated by the buyer and the appraiser in the hope that seller will follow. The market is set by the one who owns the goods. If he does not sell, nobody will have it. The more I read about attemptes to develop appraising systems, the more I am convinced that only appraisers win. Domains are usually appraised downward by auctioneers and other aftermarket players. The longer a domain is unsold, the longer the listing/auction fees. Eventually, a domain does get sold, and again the auctioneer/lister usually gets a part of the cake. That is pure sabotage for sellers. Appraisals are always subjective to each involved individual. Ask 1,000 people for their opinion: They will be all different. And even if they all agree about a price, the seller can take any action. Why should anybody pay attention to whatever appraisal? Does any guy drop his girlfriend because somebody says she's not pretty ... Success, all of You!

This is my take on the appraisal business,

I was under the impression that if you were having a car, house, jewels ect appraised it would be for insurance purposes to replace these such items if any misfortune ever came to them. With this being said I dont believe that anyone can perform a domain name appraisal, Its never going to be lost in a fire or dropped on a street corner ect.

An appraisal on a domain name is just someones opinion on what value they think should be bestowed on a domain name. So lets just say for arguements sake you own xhdjrukfmdhtsye.com and you purchased it as an investment or just because you liked it, the value for that domain is whatever you paid for it. Now if someone or some company is willing to purchase it from you for whatever price is agreed upon , thats is the new value placed on that domain. ( Hence whatever someone is willing to pay for it)

I have an interesting question to pose. If like you local real estate agent will appraise your house for fair market value and if you sign with him to sell your house and if after XX Days he isnt able to sell your house for that price ( Appraised Value ) He would then purchase your property for that price. When I see anyone on the internet perform this service for domain names, I may change my mind about appraisals but at this point stick with Whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

Hmmm Wave and Bitshack theres an interesting idea for you two your both rich domainers. Damn Im full of great ideas

I do appraisals.
I also dont over evaluate the names to boost anybody's ego.
I may have lost repeat business with telling it how it is but unfortunately 80 pct of the names that come my way are total crap and I feel its fairer to let the owner know this from the start.

I get a lot of the 'it must be worth a fortune as is sounds like its worth a fortune' value association problems and a lot of sellers get disappointed.
many people reg the most incredibly bad domains.

There were some valid points posted but before people knock 'professional' appraisals completely you have to remember there are those out there who actually need an appraisal. I think we do provide a valid service.
Some owners bought their domain a long while ago, havent kept an eye on developments and have absolutely no idea about current values. They have no clue about domain forums where they would get a better, more balanced appraisal, I admit.

The other consideration is this:
A seller may well be able to get an appraisal from a forum but there is no way he can show the result of this to a potential buyer.
Firstly, the average value given is likely to be relatively reseller based than end-user and secondly, the buyer could then go on that same forum and get a similar name for far less.

Also , as it stands , some domains do have a real-world intrinsic value. For example, 2 + 3 letter .coms. We can all appriase these domains within a relatively tight range as a guide for a novice seller. These names are inherently valuable.
The problems arises with more non-specific domains, maybe two-worders with small traffic and links. With these names it really is a case of guestimation within a wider range.

There are a lot of domainers taking the p**s with their appraisal models and they have badly corrupted the integrity of the market.
I also agree, the use of automated appraisal scripts is complete bolox.

4U-Domains.

Being a domain appraiser and seller ( I assume ) are you confident enough in your field to take on my above mentioned proposal to the general public?.

That if I pay you money to do an appraisal on all my domains and then I wish to sell them at the appraised value via your service. and if I cannot work any deals that would entitle me to the appraised value for these domains that you/your company would stand behind your appraisals and purchase these domains?

I mean a domain is real estate. Isn't it? and if real estate agents and companies are as confident they can sell a property for what they appraise it at why dont we see the same service offered for domains?

And just out of curiousity how does one become a domain appraiser?
Where does one receive credentials in becoming a domain appraiser.
How much weight would an appraisal from your company hold in an open market? say I am in the process of dealing with microsft and I come into their boardroom with an appraisal from 4u-domains.com

These are questions I am directing at you , not out of spite or any malice but I would really like to know these answers and you are the only one to identify yourself as an expert in this thread. These are real questions related to a business with a cloud over its head.
