    I recently read a thread discussing domain investment strategy. Members were going back and forth on whether or not hand-registering domain names is a profitable investment strategy… The simple answer is yes, it CAN be. The more detailed answer is that 95% of today’s domain registrations are terrible. A large majority of people DO NOT make money on simply registering domain names, but some people with a disciplined strategy DO make money...{READ MORE}

    I only handreg

wouldn't reg a domain nay other way

I enjoy hand registering a domain and search that goes in to buying domain names by hand reg

But by handreging a domain it might cost me a collection of reg fee renewals to get to the same stage of the domain that has probable expired a couple of times etc but I don't mind that as not in any hurry

    It's not a race

Handreg and only look for cheap deals on auctions. They aren't abundant but you can find them every once in a while.

I hand reg but have not really made money following that part, so I want to try the buying strategy.

Sold a good handful of them but I'm a patient seller...

    8 year old hand reg=16k
    4 year old hand reg=7.5k
    3 year old hand reg=6.5k
    1 year old hand reg=1k

    etc...

Kinda love the challenge of turning $8 and some renewal fees into x,xxx-xx,xxx
Did more hand regs years ago as had more time combined with less competition back then as well

I hand reg'd around 240 domains one point, I'm holding around 30 now, will be less when it comes to renewals.

Hand regs have been a complete waste of time in my experience and made a vow to never register a domain again.

Done well buying aged domains that have expired, i know some people do well with it, but for the most part i wouldn't recommend a soley hand-regging domaining strategy to anyone.

Every domainer started hand registering domain names, it all depends on your budget, but buying domains doesn't mean you are buying good names just because somebody else hand register those names.

You can also hand register good valuable domain names, it just require search skills, some unique ideas or un explored niche.

Are we really doing this again ? Its been proven over and over right here in the sales threads you can make nice money on hand regs and expires. Not $XXXXX stuff, but reg a $10 .com and sell for $500, yes it happens all the time. Even if it sells for less, nothing wrong with intelligent "domain recycling" or taking risks as long as you dont break your bank.

its a big topic with no clear answers.

if there was clear simple answer to it.. then we'd all be making money.. and probably lots of it..

the art of domaining takes a lot of time.. and often misused/lost funds... in the beginnings.

handregs have stuff going for them.. especially when comes to future trends.. crypto etc..
you can't really get anywhere when comes to future trends.. without some regging at some point in time.

heck, even hotel.com was once a reg with the trend and potential of internet working out (or not) one day in someone's mind.. or something along those lines ;)

    jmo......cheers

For an experienced domainer, it can be profitable for sure. With discipline, that is.

GOOD hand regs (domains other than geo that have obvious end users and at the same time stand on their own legs, having all the right charasteristics of a BRAND, and being the first choice for someone, preferably many) are SCARCE. If they truly exist at all. But with a lot patience you can find domains that are close enough or lack just one aspect. Then you just wait UNTIL you find one. Mostly by going thru a gazillion of names. And not expecting to find one every single day.

Add into the mix a healthy amount of as good as possible, and as multipurpose as possible, names and voila.

Nope. Not that easy. But possible for sure. Depends a lot about discipline and the effort you put into it. And how much you enjoy it because the reg rush isn't as nearly as intoxicating as the auction rush.

I will end this by saying:

Buying from auctions and aftermarket is the SANE way to do it.

Got about 200 names in emerging technologies , assume 150+are handregs .
A lot of wise advices so far .
I sold in the last 3 months 2 handreg names
    ARcreator in King 6k
    XRstories in King 2k
refused many other xxxx offers .

What works for me is the focus on emerging tech, Its important to handreg after u have made a lot of research . stay sharp ,and listen to your inner voice when It concerns a new tech that hasn't matured yet .
U can get alot of great keywords that way .
When people looked for VR and chose bestvrheadsets I looked for XRheadsets/ARcreator etc
To say it always works ,no it's not but that's my path

    good advice
i think u did good to reg some good xr ar keywords.. instead of crap vr names like u showed.. crypto at that time would have been even better.. for all of us

but like u say not all trends work out....so a
    ton of research is key

    Thanks .
It's not necessarily XR or AR.
People liked to register Immersive names and then it died , I still liked the keyword and it's potential and it was pretty easy to get the best names there for cheap(even if it's not a handreg) when people had bidding war for everage tech names in other niches , same with Mixed Reality and Holo (when it was really down with domainers that's when I looked )
Always be on the hunt and on the lookout for the next best thing and focus on the KEYWORD

So now I sit on them :) and keywords are strong enough to not letting go of them lol

Domain investment requires diligence and hard word on research for next best thing as you stated. Especially entering before others sees the opportunity, just like investment in stocks & shares.

Then patience for the investment to mature before the harvest. Thanks for the insight.
