Domain Hack Terminology

The definition of a hack is very fuzzy. Lets have an open discussion to define the multiple types of hacks.

(1) Dec.al - Doma.in Word Hack
(2) Critic.al - Verb.al - Promotion.al
(3) What.the.he.ck - Del.ico.us Sub.Hack
(4) Who.is - Lose.kg - Fly.to
(5) VacationRent.al - GulfOfMexi.co Longtail Hack
(6) Méxi.co IDN Hack
(7) JustBet.it - PlayWith.me Phrase Hack
(8) Just.bet.it - Play.with.me Sub.Phrase Hack

If I forgot a style let me know. Please reference the hack style number (1) when discussing it. I will update this post as we name the different types.

Well I suppose I will start it off then. Wrong or right here is what I call them.

(1) Pure Hack
(2) I have been calling them Dual Hacks but there must be a better term.
(3) C.r.ap just kidding. I call them Sub.Hacks
(4) ??
(5) Longtail Hack
(6) IDN Hack
(7) Phrase Hack

I have different idea about domain hacks.
I personally think it's difficult for the users to type, most of day today users don't know much about cctlds.
Most of are just type the word, then calculating where should they put dot, so the process is slow to reach website. Also it doesn't always give clear idea when giving that domain to others. as an example, let's see about "doma.in" , so when we give this to someone how we pronounce that? visit "domain"? visit "doma dot in" ? so user able to keep that in their mind easily? I don't think so.

I respect your opinion but this thread is about none of those things.

You do have a point about how easy it is to tell someone the address.

Would a pronounceable pure hack be considered a premium hack?

Example:

Anim.al -pure hack
Sc.am -premium pure hack.

Sc.am is very easy to say.

You forgot a style...like Let.me/in (subdirectory hacks).

1. Word hack
2. I guess you could call them dual hacks, but for the most part they're glorified word hacks. Most of the cases of those that I've seen have generally had the hack word being more important than the SLD word.
3. Subdomain hack aka subhack.
4. Phrase hacks just like #7.
5. Crap IMO but would also fall under phrase hacks. Longtail hacks isn't bad I guess. I just can't see many of those being worth a crap.
6. IDN word hack.
7. Phrase hack.

I've always mentioned Doma.in to people as "doma dot in" or "d o m a dot i n" and they tend to pick up what it is pretty easily. That's part of why shortness of hack is important. Trying to verbalize what supercalifragilisticexpialidocio.us is to someone would be painful. :/

I understand why (7) is a phrase hack but (4) is only one word plus the SLD.

Its hard for me to put (4) in the same category as dontyouwanttokick.me

Funny - I've had l3log.com and l3logs.com for a long time. (l3 of course being one of the l337 ways of doing a B)

l33t 5p34k is not infallible as you can see, hehe. That's probably why that pair I have is more than likely worthless, but still...sort of a nostalgia hold at this point.
