Domain expired on 26th March, what now?

I have been watching a particular domain for over a year now. It is not a premium domain and has not been reserved by the registry.
I do know, however, that the registrant is also the registrar.

These are the details:
Domain Registration Date: Wed Mar 27 00:01:00 GMT 2002
Domain Expiration Date: Mon Mar 26 23:59:59 GMT 2007
Domain Last Updated Date: Thu May 11 02:11:51 GMT 2006

Expired almost three weeks ago, however the domain is still functional and there is no update on the status.
How long before the domain is actually dropped?

Most registrars allow a 30 day period from expiration date for the owner to renew the domain. And becuase you see the registrar as the owner of the domain it may be a private registration.

Thanks for the responses.

I know for a fact that the person who owns the registrar is also the registrant of the domain. I can't say why.

But the 30 days may explain it.

The domains has to go through various phases until it is up for sale again, if it is not renewed

Depending on the registrar, the domain has to go through the following phases before it is set for sale again.
After expiry date the domain is on-hold for maximum 45days, where it can be deleted or renewed.

Then it will go through to redemption grace period for another 30days, where registrar will still be able to renew but with a penalty fee.

If after these days the domain is not renewed, within an additional 5 days where it will be in pending delete status, it will be released and will be up for sale again.

Having said that on the whois, you might see the domain still active and normal. All it means is that the registration will be automatically renewed by the registry system on the first day after expiration date (regardless if payment is effected or not).

This occurs to all domains, so if you check for eg on Registry Whois, all domains will be renewed in the same way. However this does not mean that they will be actually renewed.
