zip code mobi's IMO are good for local residents and not visitors. I recently visited Chicago and I have no clue what zip code I was in, nor would I remember it if you told me. Just got to keep that in mind when developing. A local may want a restaurant but I've never booked a hotel room in my hometown.

i agree with what scandiman said, if u were a visitor 2 manhattan, theres like multiple zip codes for it when u google it so locals would favor the zip more than out of towners...the only zip code that i think is well known is 90210 beverly hills

Interesting, I just tried my own here in Cal and I get the same thing.

i think that in areas where people identify with their zip codes (98052 would be one of them since it contains microsoft) they will be outstanding mobi investments

this is where you could really leverage the web on a mobile for all manner of local things like pizza, dry cleaning , shopping delivery etc

figure out a good site design and then apply across as many zips as you could

i only see it working in areas which have fairly stable, disctinctive and well-defined zips though

here in canada we have postal codes ... disaster, forget it, nobody has any idea where they begin or end, nobody gives a hoot

also 3 digit numbers for area codes could also be terrific if developed right, like marin county which is a really wealthy county north of san francisco is 415, you could do a great local oriented site with that number

The US is not much better as far as the boundaries for postal zip codes. As far as phone area codes, they get moved from time to time here in CAL with our population growth. This could work in your favor, or not, depending where your area code ends up. You could loose an entire city in some cases.

scandiman, right after i made the last post i went and got a list of zipcodes and area codes and even if you could find one that worked for a city, you are correct when you say that they do change and that could ruin a busines though if you built up a good business and had to change a web name your customers would probably follow

i checked palm springs zips and it has at least 3, all available so which would you choose

i only see this working in area where a zip or area code is well defined for a distinct group and is unlikely to change

as an example north of san diego there is a very wealthy area that is virtually a private walled community called rancho santa fe, very very wealthy (it's where those heavens gate cult people took their lives, they had rented a very large mansion) itappears to have only 1 zipcode for the whole city so it really identifies with it, guess what, it's been taken

i still think it's a good strategy but one you'd really want to think through beforehand

Heres where i see the problem is with zip codes names. Usually they work best if they are in one big portfolio. There are big companies that have done this and constantly trying to get a complete network, but they have the financial resources to do this.

If your an individual only highly known zip codes make sense to me or maybe even a zip code of a farm area if you in real estate and want to get business in that particular zip. Otherwise its like having one stone on the seashore. Not very valuable alone unless u make it into a precious stone.
