my registrar is not the same as my hosting, and both have options for managing dns. also, they both offer an email solution but i want to use the one offered by my registrar. according to them, i need to use their nameservers, but if i do this then mydomain.com won't be set to my hosting nameservers anymore.

so... how do i play around with dns (preferably on my registrar's end) to allow for email provided by the registrar, but website hosting on the host?

You have to create A records at your registrar that point www.your domain .com to the IP address asigned by hosting provider.

Personally, I would prefer to use my hosts's dns.
This will be more convenient, especially when you need to add a subdomain or change an MX etc.
If you are using your registrar's nameservers and if you need to add a subdomain with your hosting account, You will have to add the A record for that at your registrar end.
