Just wondering if anyone else was disgusted by the behaviour of the scavengers picking through the remains of the shipwreck off the coast of Devon.
Some of them trying to justify their actions by saying it was an 800 year old tradition.
IT looks like theft to me, and I cannot understand how the police stood by and let it happen.

The police stood by as its not illegal to move it but cannot conceal it and should report their finds to the martime authorities, also it still belongs to the original owners and they can claim it back whever they ask.

No, I say good luck to them. Not because what theyre doing isnt actually theft, because it is.

But if the police sealed the whole area off for a month to stop it, only then beginning the long clean up period afterwards, who do you think would foot the bill for the policing and the clean up operation?? The shipping company?? Dont think so. Ill tell you who, the local council and the very same people who are doing the clean-up operation for themselves right now. My mother being one of them.

I mean, what owners of the seaweed ridden goods these people are picking up will actually want it back??

So Badger if your house is struck by a tornado and your computers thrown out into the street, its alright if I come along and save you the trouble of cleaning up and take the computers home?

No its different, the goods landed on a public place and due to some merchant trading law they can be moved but not concealed, its very different to someones hous ebeing destroyed!

One of them got a Landrover and 2 others got BMW motorbikes.

They have to fill out a form when they take the stuff, but i think most of them are just ignoring it.

lol - yeah take it... :)

Entirely different set of principals but sure go ahead, be my guest.

I'll await the brand new bad boy that my insurance company is sending me to replace the computer that must have been destroyed in the storm.. :)

Those idiots got their faces all over the news. They'll get what's coming to them!

Update:
The "despicable" behaviour of scavengers has forced the authorities to invoke ancient legislation to stop looters raiding cargo on a Devon beach. Powers not used for 100 years will be used to force people to return goods recovered from the stricken container ship MSC Napoli.

Separate laws will also be used to ban the public from Branscombe beach. The police said organised gangs were targeting the beach and were behind some of the worst looting. Over the last two days scavengers have descended on the beach, taking away goods that included BMW motorbikes, wine, face cream and nappies.

Officers closed roads to the beach to deter treasure-seekers and to allow contractors to start the clear-up operation, which is expected to begin at 0700 GMT on Wednesday. That meant people had to walk several miles to the beach but that did not deter about 200 scavengers who were rummaging through the cargo.

The numbers dwindled later after the beach was sealed off by a 100ft-long metal fence.

Mark Rodaway, the Acting Receiver of Wreck, said the "despicable" behaviour of scavengers had persuaded him that special powers dating back to the Merchant Shipping Act 1854 were needed to force people to return goods.

"Personal belongings, not goods for sale, were being rifled through and strewn on the beach.

"I would ask anyone to reflect quietly on how they would feel if that was their belongings.

"From what I witnessed it was clear that there was no intent to store safely or record goods with the appropriate authorities, as such we will be utilising legislation available to prevent people removing more goods and if necessary using the law to prosecute people through the courts."

Just saw on the news that some morons from Essex drove all the way to Devon to join in, only to find that all the spoils had already been taken.

im surprised they even managed to find their way there.. :)

Can't say i wouldn't be doing the same thing personally. Notice no one has been arrested, this is being advertised as "illegal" however there are some very old scavenging laws which contradict that.

Not say it is legal or illegal, however the reason no one has been arrested is that they do not have solid grounds to do it on.

They're stealing off rich companies not poor people, let them take it. I imagine they'll be getting a better return from the insurance anyway. If not they will learn to get better insurance in future!

Half the stuff would only end up killing some random animal anyway - if plastic beer holders kill fish, imagine what a landrover would do. ;)

This happened last year as well didn't it? A ship-wrecked off of the British Coast and lots of stuff washed up onto beaches?

I think it's harsh to call it looting, it's more collecting what has washed up. Some people collect seashells, cuttlefish or even bottles. And some collect Motorbikes and Land Rovers! :notme:

Its not illegal the police where there giving them forms to fill in after they have been "scavenging" i saw it on ITV and they are supposed to fill it in but the think not alot of them will, i think its so the original owners can claim $$ on insurance back

I think they are providing a service - take it away and make some use of it I say. If they didn't do it, there would be a cost for collecting it, no doubt by the council or private firms and don't tell me that they would dispose of it, cos it would still end up on ebay.

Do you think the original owners want the stuff back - do they hell, with the odd exception ie private goods (1 maybe 2 cases?) they'll claim off the shipping line.

It is not illegal. The police can only use there 'Tape' to prevent access or prevent access by fencing it off. I have done this before, when i was around 12. It was great, plenty of fire wood after letting it dry off.

Also, in this age, if they tryed to change the law, it would cause mass-protests, and i would part of that.. They are not morons, they are just stupid to get caught on camera..
