if you happen to know their search terms, you'd have the answer.
if it's type in traffic, you can always post a poll as in.

"Dear User, thanks for visiting, we don't really know what we should serve you with. Why don't YOU tell us what you want to see on here" Then place either a poll where they just hit a button and DON'T have to register to vote, for which you get a pretty good idea as to what they're looking for. OR, since you already pointed towards image hosting, see whether there are affiliate programs out there where you can just simply link to other sites. make some cash as a referrer. again, make sure it looks decent or no one will click the links.
last but not least, if you wanna go and develop, you'd still be best off with an image hosting site, with 40k traffic you have enough reason to get that started. just make sure you're making a bit of a difference and don't look like all the other image hosting sites.

Edit: I just read in your other post that you know what 100% of your traffic is looking for. There shouldn't really be a problem/question then. Check with your attorney regarding copyright violations and how you can distance yourself from these if you're running an upload/image hosting service and you're ready to go.

I would make it a "mega" upload site.

I would have a section for image hosting, one for file hosting, a hot-or-not type script. Offer website hosting too.

Like an All In One Upload website.

Save yourself a lot of work and contact zshare.net and tell them you have 40000 visitors a month looking for their site coming to yours, tell them your willing to forward all traffic coming to your domain to them for say $500 a month, you have no hassle and some cash and they have 40000 more visitors...

Another one, why not turn it into a nice affiliate page for Hostgator, with 40000 visitors a month you'll get a few takers and hostgater pays decent commisions.

Just a thought.

with a domain like XF.com and 40k visitors/month, there's a LOT more to be made than $500/month or selling the impressions or waiting for a commission. The key is in being pro-active and creating your market rather than feeding someone else.

Image hosting is typically associated with social networking sites. So instead of offering image hosting, why not go with something else that people who use social networking sites would be interested in?

If I were you I would make an image hosting site since the .net is an image hosting site. Make it easy to use and unique.

I'm making an image hosting site right now as a matter of fact, and although it is a pretty saturated market I'm making it as unique and easy to use unique as possible to set it apart from the crowd.

I'd bet a lot of the traffic is from broken image links. Since you don't want to compete with zshare.net it would probably be best just to park the domain. Optionally find a related affiliate program you can redirect the traffic to.
