Is developing a BAD DOMAIN NAME a waste of time? I have one that is "Christmas Toys" oriented and have considered turning it into an EBAY AFFILIATE NICHE STORE FOR THE HOLIDAYS. BUT I NEED TO DO THIS NOW IF I'M going to it. So, is this a really bad idea or what????

Thanks in Advance,
Parsec

The domain name has very little to do with whether a site is profitable or not. Your developing and marketing skills will determine profit. But the idea is, if you're going to put so much time into developing, why not start with a domain that is well-suited? It's only $8 or so.

I agree with Gene.

If you have big plans for it, then keywords and letter quality are absolutely irrelevant.

Go for it.

The name I picked up was...don't laugh:
www.mostwantedchristmastoys.com

I can build an ebay niche store around it in about 3 hours or so. It's very very niche oriented though (Holiday Targeting) so I would like your opinions on that?

I had to redeem myself after picking up that first domain so I snatched www.blackjackreview.net

Thanks, Parsec

Though, developing a bad name is not a waste at all. Remember, people are willing to go after high-traffic domains / revenue domains / high PR domains even if they are ihavethelongestdomainever.com :tu:

keep in mind that a lot of popular websites are not necessarily good domain names: google is really an accidental misspelling of googol. and what does ebay mean, other than the definition brought about by what the site is now? youtube, joost, ebaumsworld, etc. -- none of these would mean a thing if the net didn't exist and didn't mean anything to the masses when they first went online. Short names are always nice but if your site has something people value they'll come no matter what.

I agree with you godinu, content is the key. If you build it well they will come :)

Parsec,

You are using "build-a-niche-store". From their description it seems that they draw traffic from/to eBay. Some questions I have for you so I can understand better:
  • Are your products listed on eBay under your account?
  • IF they are listed on eBay? Or do you just get a commission from the sale?
  • The eBay game is a different game, if you look through the google ads, you will find that eBay already puts some money into that effort. So, if you are selling a product by referral, you might be just competing with eBay for those clicktroughs while getting the customers there in an indirect manner.
  • Can you talk to the "build-a-niche-store" people and ask them how to make best use of your marketing dollars? What do they say?

The company officially changed the name of its service from AuctionWeb to eBay in September 1997. Originally, the site belonged to Echo Bay Technology Group, Omidyar's consulting firm. Omidyar had tried to register the domain name echobay.com(this company's slogan is now "What eBay could have been.") but found it already taken by the Echo Bay Mines, a gold mining company, so he shortened it to his second choice, eBay.com.
